As we are into a new month, it is now time for a new thread for recording those all important rainfall totals.

We have just had a very dry June and this month is expected to start off on a very dry note as well. However, more unsettled weather is just around the corner if the latest model output is correct. I was watching Brian's latest video forecast on the TWO YouTube channel and as from yesterday (according to that forecast anyway), most of the models were going for a much more unsettled outlook to things, although the ECM still wanted to keep the good weather going.

If the weather does turn more unsettled, this thread will probably come to life and become a lot busier after a very quiet first few days. This of course, is quite a pivotal month because if it ends up being yet another dry month, it will then be very difficult for this summer as a whole to be anything other than drier than average and perhaps, quite substantially so.

If this ends up being quite a wet month in the end though, it will then be all to play for as far as this summer is concerned with its overall fate then being likely to depend on what happens during August.

However, this month turns out though, this is now the very place to record those all important rainfall totals.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank (shown as station 1 below) and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (shown below as station 2) is as follows:

24 Hour Rainfall Total As At 09:00 UTC (10am BST) this morning: 24.8 mm at Station 1, 53.2 mm at Station 2

No, that is not a typo. That is the actual amount of rain which has fallen here during the last 24 hour hours, mainly as a result of yesterday's thunderstorms which resulted in 41.0 mm of rain being recorded in the space of just a single hour at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and that is far more than anything which I have reported here on TWO since I first joined this forum back in 2016.

In addition to that, even Edinburgh Gogarbank had its wettest day of this summer so far during the last 24 hours by quite a considerable amount, but the big difference between the totals which I am reporting for these two stations shows how localised these events tend to be.

Total Amount For This Month So Far: 38.6 mm (60.2 % of LTA) at station 1, 60.2 mm (92.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Month So Far: 4 (39.2 % of LTA) at station 1, 3 (31.6 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Month So Far: 0 at station 1, 1 at station 2

We are still only in the first week of this month and yet this already means that just another 5.0 mm of rain or more needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

Total Amount During This Summer So Far: 61.6 mm (31.9 % of LTA) at station 1, 89.4 mm (46.2 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Summer So Far: 7 (22.0 % of LTA) at station 1, 8 (27.8 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Dry Days During This Summer So Far: 21 at station 1, 21 at station 2

Total Amount During This Year So Far: 366.0 mm (48.5 % of LTA) at station 1, 380.6 mm (54.0 % of LTA) at station 2
Number of Rain Days During This Year So Far: 61 (44.4 % of LTA) at station 1, 64 (51.5 % of LTA) at station 2

The nearest SEPA station to me, Comiston got 49.6 mm yesterday (well, 9-9), we only got half of it during the daytime but then got hit with an equal amount in the early hours, some of which found it's way through my kitchen roof cry

And it's raining heavily again now - summer is over

.. which is such a pity as this was shaping up to be quite a decent summer (all that was need for that, was for the pattern which had in June to then carry on through the rest of the summer) and although it is true that the gardens need this rain after such a dry June, I don't that getting these vast amounts of rain in a oner in this fashion is exactly going to be doing the gardens any good either.

In addition to that, it is just typical of our weather that this is all happening at the start of the Edinburgh Trades Fortnight when a lot of people take their summer holidays, after everything had been fine beforehand when nearly everyone who works these days was still working.

After a bit of rain earlier the monthly total is up to 4.4mm here now.
johncs2016
05 July 2021 14:52:33

I can now confirm that the final 24 hour totals up to 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning were 26.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and an astonishing 57.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that yesterday was the wettest day of this year so far at both of those stations, especially at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, at least a further 4.0 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 10am BST this morning at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with a further 9.6 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 3pm this afternoon and it is still raining here as I write.

That now takes this month's total to 44.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 74.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that more rain has now already fallen during this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than the 1981-2010 July average for that particular station which means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

Even at Edinburgh Gogarbank, only at least another 19.8 mm of rain now needs to fall at that particular station between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual amounts.

This is clearly not turning out to be such a dry summer after all as it had looked as though it was going to be and despite the very dry June which we had, it is not inconceivable that this summer could still end up being wetter than average overall in the end, at least in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

I have a bucket with 12cm of water in it since yesterday. The bottom of the bucket has an 8cm radius, the water level has a 10cm radius

https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1223372110  which says that's 3,066cm3 of water

Taking the top radius of the bucket, 12.5 cm I can divide 3,066cm3 by 12.5cm x 12.5 cm x pi to give 6.24cm (62.4mm) of rain falling in the top of the bucket in 24 hours - which isn't too far off local weather stations given I used a 15cm toy story ruler for it all :p

I think that quite nicely, explains why the resulting rainfall totals were so much higher at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than what they were at Edinburgh Gogarbank which seems to have got away with that relatively lightly.

However, we can't also forgot that Edinburgh Gogarbank still had its wettest day of this year so far even with that, which just goes to to show how astonishing these figures are.

I can confirm though that this isn't an actual record because according to the botanic gardens' own website, you have to go all the way back to July 1985 for that when around 82 mm of rain fell in a single day there.

However, I wouldn't imagine that there would have been too many occasions when the total for there in a single day was higher than what it was yesterday and that total of 41.0 mm of rain in just an hour surely can't be all that far away from the all time record for that as well.

The good news though is that the rain has finally cleared away from here, and it is now a bit brighter, though still with a lot of cloud around (in other words, back to the more boring weather which we are more typically used to).
