Well, so much for this lovely weather which we were meant to be getting during this week under high pressure.

With that in mind, I was hoping to wake up to much brighter start to today than of late with some sunshine but no.

That was always going to be asking for too much and what we have instead is yet another dull and depressing start to yet another day here in the Scottish Borders with yet more constant grey skies.

It isn't actually raining here, but the cloud cover is low enough to envelope the tops of the nearby hills.

I will be travelling back up to Edinburgh later on today and if it isn't any better up there, this is probably the final nail in the coffin in terms of us getting a sunnier than average month at Edinburgh Gogarbank this time.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Clearing now though

Day 1 of the supposedly sunny new week of high pressure.

Cloudy. Dark. And not even dry air - the low clouds are still scudding along in their humid way.

That's the problem with the UK climate in a nutshell: the sun isn't strong enough, and there is too much moisture in the air.

Similar here, thick cloud cover all day with zero sunshine. I did not expect this given that this is a high pressure dominated week but then again its august! We`ll probably find, again, september comes out with more sunshine than this month.

I've a feeling this High Pressure will continue the summer's pattern. Looks like Western Scotland, NW & SW England along with Wales will see the warmest, sunniest weather

Had some lovely warm sunshine in Sheffield yesterday, but, so far today it's dull and very miserable and there's even light showers, not forecast!

It's returning tropical maritime airmass. It's very moist. It's originally very warm and stable but cooled extensively in the lowest layers producing a lot of cloud, even producing some subtle instability there, hence light showers (thanks also the winds blowing up the hills). If there is some fohn effects, this airmass and the HP can produce really nice, very warm weather.

HP no longer good any more as now always bring cloudy weather for no reason and becoming extremely addicted like someone chain smoking cannot stop.  Something need to change to remove the clouds amount back to the past HP sunny days.  Yesterday and before yesterday the sun came out useless at 2pm which is very useless due to short time and sun set sooner.  My wife want to go out walking this afternoon is disappointed and we will not go out today as we don't deal with cloud and walking weather same time, extremely unusable, cold and depressing, not nice to take pictures too.

Maxima in the teens starting to appear with regularity in the iPhone app forecasts for London. Under sunny spells. That’s Autumn, folks.

That why all apps and models had been severely wrong and poor this summer and told my wife those temps you expect in end of sept or early October and it rather cold for August when the average should be 22-23C.  Told her that even on average days we don't get sunshine any more like before.

To get to 20C in August required maximum full sunshine nowadays unlike in the past 20C in the rain or over cast conditions but now is just ;pw tp high teens temps.   What ever the position of the HP here we used to get low to mid 20's easily but now with clouds around keep temps down to low to high teens temps.

Never understand why idiot HPs cannot move east easily as it used to be due to earth rotation.  I always remember in the old days you see HP move east giving us a average temps to heatwave levels.   I always see in the USA weather map chart LP and HP move freely east so that apply the same in here that give us more variety of weather pattern.

Yep, it does have a Septemberish feel. HST, if long if it's sunny, I like it!

I don't know whether to complain or not about today. The sun has not come out once here, given the setup that's pretty disappointing and it has been a rather dull month in general. Having said that it is dry with light winds and reasonable temperatures so could be far far worse.

Here in Fulham, london aspretty well all of August it has been cool with NE winds a feature of the last 3 months or so (with the odd exception). A stiff NE breeze added to this evenings low temperatures. No end in sight either , if anything cooler still later this week.So disappointing

This just illustrates perfectly why I get so hacked off with the weather.

What the hell sort of nonsense is this at 9:15 this morning?

It's the giant Aberdeen shaped cloud that just forms and sits there

Fortunately it did shift by mid-morning to leave a rare fine day but more soul destroying crud filtered down from the north this evening

Any other season of the year a high sat over the UK would see pretty much clear skies countrywide but because it's summer it's a cloudfest.

Muck sat over the Midlands and Wales only stopping at the Llŷn Peninsula which is sticking out in the sunshine. Bet it won't be like that in a fortnight when I'm there - the gloom will go all the way to Ireland

Yes lot of questions what the muck doing there in the Midlands today that won't move despite Earth spinning around mean we should be out of this clouds and to the open skies.  Also winds was light so where the clouds came from and what it doing over the HP when yesterday was sunny from lunchtime onward.   All the answers is the most stupid climate operate here very wrongly.  I read a lot of complaints in NW about the clouds and how it come from and why spread too much to Wales.

You both need to come to Ireland. We are being blasted out of it with heat and sun again.

The problem is we are in the returning tropical maritime airmass. It is very moist and originally very warm, but it travelled so far north before returning SE'wards/S'wards over the UK that has cooled extensively forming persistent Sc clouds. Sometimes there is subtle instability in the lowest layer if there's a little sunshine or an orographic event, hence the unexpected light showers over Sheffield yesterday.

Sometimes you can get lovely warm sunny weather in this synoptic event, if there is fohn effects, or if some drier air is injected into this airmass, say from Europe.

On Thursday some Polar airmass is forecast to move into the country; there might be some sunshine, especially over the lee side of hills, but looks like some convective activity in the E/SE. I think it'll be rather cool.

Even so it far to  sensitive stupid climate we got and HP job really should be kilning the clouds off no matter what flow coming from.  I know NE winds does bring sunny skies always in the past after cloud burn off in the mornings.   SST also at the warmest time of the year should not bring cloud inland any more as it does in Spring early Summer season.
