Whilst we are back to our boring wind and rain 'default'

Romania has now seen 4 heavy falls of snow over the past week and more expected today when last week it was 21c.

This is now officially the worst start to Spring I have ever recorded and in fact the worst since 1996
I thought last week was bad enough with revolting grey skies, cold day temperatures and mild nights
This week another level of hideousness. The same suicide inducing grey skies and dire temperatures but with the added poison of wind and rain

Sunshine hours for the first third of March:

1. 2011 - 61.6
2. 2010 - 60.2
3. 2020 - 60.0
4. 2007 - 59.4
5. 2009 - 56.5
6. 2008 - 54.5
7. 2017 - 52.3
8. 2015 - 50.5
9. 2016 - 42.6
10. 2014 - 38.5
11. 2019 - 36.3
12. 2012 - 36.1
13. 2018 - 22.4
14. 2013 - 19.9
15. 2021 - 15.9

The situation is even more grim than the bottom of the barrel ranking would suggest given that almost 40% of the total was recorded on the 1st alone. Endless soul destroying grey muck day after day since then with a daily average of barely an hour's sunshine. Not a single day with sunshine during the peak hours of 12noon – 2pm. I'd go as far as to say it's the worst month in a toxic run since last October. Even December and January weren't this vile.

Unbelievable mind-numbing rubbish for a time of year when the weather should be at its most varied and interesting. I dread to think how bad this year is going to end up given that this is usually the time of year when sunshine levels get a boost prior to falling off a cliff as soon as the wretched season of 'summer' arrives.

Instead of being the typical 9 months of autumn, 3 months of spring, over the last decade, it's heading towards 12 months of autumn since the start of June last year. I'd be hard pressed to identify a more putrid run of months in my lifetime.

The monsoon season appears to be over after record breaking Autumn and winter rainfall here. Now been very dry for almost a month with just a couple of mms yesterday. With HP looming we are now entering the drought season. I doubt I will see much rain before next October now. Not good for Spring gardening with the potential for frosts and cold winds.

Yesterdays rain wasn't much to write home about here as well and the winds haven't been as strong as I was expecting either.

Like taxes and death, unpleasant spring easterlies are almost a forgone conclusion in the South with garden watering and metered water bills on the up probably.

Seriously, what IS it with the squally rain and strongest winds occurring in the middle of the night? Every sodding time.
I do have an interest in the weather but I also value my sleep. At least this one has a SW component rather than the usual in-your-face southerlies but it's pretty grotty out there.

Tell me about it. It's lashing it down here heavy strong winds along with frequent heavy rain and hail showers. I can hear the ice lashing against the windows. Horrible outside.😠

I must have got my house moved to the extreme East according to the BBC forecaster. Horrible cold, grey and showery day yesterday whilst i was being told it was glorious and the warmest day of the year. Out by 10 C here. Today is the same. Already raining despite showers not forecast till the afternoon.

I have few expectations for March & April, so if it's dry it's a bonus; if it's also sunny, then great; sunny & warm fantastic. But cold is also fine, especially with a bit of snow.

I'm a bit like that about October & November, too.

Snowed there every day for past two weeks and even Bucharest has had 3 substantial falls of snow in one week with more to come.

What's the point of having high pressure over the Uk in Spring if it doesn't deliver sunshine? I gather yesterday was good in the north, and to day we might see the sun in the SE, but the forecast after that is for five (count 'em, five) days of complete and continuous anticyclonic gloom

At least it means predominantly dry weather and generally calmer - away from the periphery.
Bright skies with occasional glimpses of sun aren’t a bad option.

Exactly - what is the point it's frustrating because the cloud holds back the temperatures yet not cold enough for frost at nights either and too cloudy for any proper spring warmth/sunshine during the day - meanwhile in Eastern Europe the low pressure systems plunge south so they get a northerly with snow ( as per above) and the UK misses out on the fun - all thanks to this stubborn ridge of HP - pretty boring weather TBH.

19c in Edinburgh yesterday remarkable certainly much warmer than down here. And warmest day anywhere in the UK since October.

I guess the sun isn't strong enough yet to burn off/break up the cloud to the same extent as it would later in the spring.

I would say that Aberdeen Richard will be suicidal after that but he always is anyway....

It was warm and sunny definitely as I had my lunchtime walk around Swanston at the base of the Pentlands. "I wish it was really gloomy and cold", I thought as I strode about in a t-shirt.

Normal service for here has been well and truly resumed though, as this afternoon has brought us a return to constant grey skies with nothing happening which is even remotely interesting in terms of any sort of actual weather with the temperatures also refusing to rise.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Yes, this feels like it's been nothing but a total waste of high pressure. Apart from the odd afternoon here and there, most days have been more or less completely overcast. As others have said, the return of the Atlantic next week might actually bring more sunshine, though there will be a risk of showers.
