Just been up Blackford Hill (150m) 3cm of frozen snow and a great view of the Pentlands which are thickly covered. The Ochils and Fife hills are all white, as are the West Lothian Hills and even Arthur's Seat above the city. Back down at 70m and we still have treacherous frozen slush.

Here, conditions will be most favourable for snow later this afternoon and the early part of the night before it turns slightly milder.
Chances are low here but I think the snowline might drop to 250m for a time.
Weather warning for snow down to 150m is 15 miles NNW of here.  Might go for a drive up Greenhow Hill at some point.

Know it well Tim. Hope you see some. This mornings thin covering is still here and freezing again as the temperature was falling to near 0 C under clear skies. However low cloud is now moving in from the NE....hmmmm

To make matters even worse, the Met Office have replaced the official yellow warning for snow in this area with an official yellow warning for RAIN.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Thanks Jerry. Most satisfying when the snow lasts all day, a proper winters day for you.

Meanwhile here,  wet snow and sleet falling and a temp of 1.1c.

Light to moderate wet snow here for the last few hours.

Although it's very wet out there its now sticking on favoured surfaces, temp hovering just above freezing.

A reasonable start to Winter

Given the state of the pavements round here I'll take either extra snow on top or rain to wash the ice away, councils been caught napping again

I know that this is probably a debate for a different forum but our local councils are always in no win situation here.

On one hand, we hardly ever get enough snow and ice these days to make the use of gritters economically viable and yet  we moan about them not being there when we need them.

After looking promising with some wet snow and temps dropping , the temperature has risen to 1.8c and it is mostly rain falling. Looks colder and snowier to the west of here.

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature at 7pm this evening had jumped up to 5.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so I can now already safely say that it won't be snowing here any time soon.

EDIT:

Actually, it turns out that I might have been looking at the wrong data earlier on because having checked that more thoroughly, I have noticed that the temperature at 7pm this evening was actually 1.5°C rather than what I actually reported here.

From that, we might still be in with a chance of getting some snow after all although we could do with the dew point dropping a bit there as that is still slightly above freezing at that particular station which could be enough to scupper our chances of getting snow.

FURTHER EDIT:

As at 9pm this evening, the dew point at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had dropped to below freezing and we even have an official air frost at Edinburgh Gogarbank, so this is all starting to look quite good now for some snow to possibly be on the way in this part of the world.

Hello all, long time no talk. sleety precip is falling at the moment, nothing to get excited about! Perhaps a precursor to something more solid further down the line, who Knows?  hopefully I will be able to get outside again soon. TWO.

Cooling again here back to 1.4c with more snowflakes. Strange it warmed up here as the precipitation got heavier.
Seems to be an area to the south of here around Emley/Holmfirth that didn't warm up this evening. Emley Moor at -0.2c at 9pm presumably with lying snow.

The latest radar map shows that the precipitation is now not far away from here just to our east and SE.

Unfortunately, this is showing up to be mostly rain with any sleet and snow confined to high gound, so this isn't now looking so good after all.

interesting that the BBC has sleet and +1C but the temperature is already -1C in Edinburgh as we wait for the precipitation.  May be in for a surprise John?
