Widely 18-19C dewpoints today. So a warm night ahead.

I've noticed that Heathrow (currently 17C), and to some extent other sites in the Thames Valley, often see a big drop in DPs in early afternoon on very hot days, when there is a Southerly or SE wind. The direction is due to turn more SE this afternoon so will be interesting to see if it happens. On 10 Aug 2003 (this day, 17 years ago!) it went down if I recall from 18C in the morning to a low of 7C before bouncing back up late afternoon. I thought at the time it might be turbulence from the downs bringing drier, adiabatically heated upper air to the surface. A kind of micro-foehn.

This should happen today with DPs in Heathrow etc. dropping to 13-14C by 4pm when the air temperature will be peaking (36.7C is my lucky guess).

Pff. Get a large saucepan, fill it with boiling water from the kettle, pop it on a low shelf, close the door and let the humidity melt the ice. That's how I've defrosted mine for the past few years - and it's now 26 years old!

It's absolutely roasting here at work, having come across the playground just before lunch you could feel the waves of heat coming from the asphalt. It's 26C back home and I suspect a few degrees warmer here.

Now 32c here, and it is stifling in the heat, as humidity is higher today. For old people this is real heart attack weather, little sleep followed by the body working hard to cool down

Herstmonceux the form player this season it seems. Unheralded beforehand, often overlooked by selectors, but has put together a string of classy innings to secure its long term place in the squad.

I have been there many times. Full of racist Gammon. Should be a lot of pink flesh melting today

Thanks. I'll try that next time. Bound to ice up again in a few days in this heat. I think the rubber seals have worn out as it always stops working in Summer in recent years

I got it in 1999, well my parents did. and its outlived them!

Does the site have to be audited and calibrated routinely to qualify? And by who?If so I guess many of the less formal sites would not count and most of the amateur ones (not just the side of sheds and car sensors).

The Headcorn site is a Davis Vantage Pro2+ Weather Station. Met Office ones would have to be standard exposure - a Stevenson Screen at the right height, over grass, with no obstructions nearby, etc. I do believe the MetO would assess a site before accepting it as official.

It's now reading 33.5C so I suspect it's much too high. At this rate it will be recording 38C+ today!

Having said that it's the hottest it's been in my office room so early in the day. The sun hasn't even come over to this side of the house yet and it is absolutely sweltering in here!

Headcorn Aerodrome appears to be a different site.

Temperatures look more plausible there! I still don't think it's a Met-approved site though.

For Heathrow I'm using

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IGLAFELT2/table/2020-08-10/2020-08-10/daily

As a proxy for 2 minute updates. Its a personal WX station that is both really close and has a similar temperature.

If anyone has any better suggestions I'd appreaciate hearing them.

I think today is a 36C type of day. We haven’t seen the lull between 12:00-13:00.

I have a feeling about today.
