For the record, wasn't 25th July 2019 also a 25.2 CET day?

Sorry yes it was. Not updated the record column in my spreadsheet.

I wouldn't be surprised if 12 Aug this year ends up at 25.2C as well. I can only estimate the maximums at Stonyhurst and Pershore College so I would not be surprised if my 25.1C estimate is upgraded. I estimated 25.0C for 25th Jul last year.

No. 13th August was slightly cooler than 6 August.

Accepting that my table will not be totally accurate, we have had 5 of the 30 hottest days on record in the last 2 weeks.

Thanks for the stats GW!  I do love to watch these records fall and it kind of makes me feel good to witness them!  I’ve been around for a few record summers but it still feels special!

These are amazing stats and are quite concerning, even for heat lovers.

Remarkable and concerning. I wonder what the climate change deniers have to say about this?

This sticky clag we've gone into since the heatwave ended is awful

It's a bit like the December/January "blanket" you get in a moist SW airstream when the temperature hovers around 10-12C day and night

On the hourly readings from Kew the 24 hour temperature till 09:00 today never went above 19.7C or below 17.2C and the dewpoints were almost identical to the temperature

Must be the weekend -I's starting to sound like Richard of Aberdeen

It carries on a rather worrying trend that was particularly stark last year.

In 2019 we set 13 date records across the whole year.

In 2018 we set 5 date records across the whole year.

In 2017 we set 6 date records across the whole year.

Yes, tropical cloud forest stuff. Half expect to spot rare lemurs in the trees or stumble across Jane Goodall on my walk to Costcutter.

More fascinating stats from GW - cheers. The climate trend sure is alarming, it's like we've jumped onto a trampoline in the past few years.

GFS 00z supports my recent deduction that I will probably have the temperature pattern across the month about right, but be near a degree Celsius too low with my estimate, having underestimated the heatwave (hardly surprising, given how extreme the peak days ended up being).

Rough CET estimate takes until 22nd to drop below the 19s, then 27th to drop below the 18s.

There's an issue with taking much from this, though - it's one of the coolest runs I've seen for the final week of the month. Goes to show how much of a reserve Aug 2020 has now. Even more impressive when considering that four days into the month, the CET was running well below average!

Really, it's the very gradual transition of the Atlantic trough eastward this coming week that renders a finish below the mid-17s as highly unlikely. Remains to be seen just how gradual, as there will be ex-Kyle getting involved, but even if it turned out a couple of days quicker or slower, that'd only affect the final CET by less than half a degree by my reckoning.

Sigh... the summer months have a habit of giving me headaches and not just when it's hot and humid .

I went for 17.5c in July and was too high. I’ve gone for exactly the same for August and I look like being too low!

Without Hadley, thought I'd look at my own averages. No day in August yet < 17°C; mean to 18th 20.9°C with the highest being the 12th at 25.8°C and the lowest being 4th at 17.0°C.

The 10-day run of super-17C nights has been very influential. Only the 4-day period from 2nd to 5th had sub-14 minima.
