A strange month here on the western fringes of the New Forest. Rain's fallen on 7 of 22 days so about a third so far, but only one of those days put down 1.0 mm or more - that being 13th, during a heavier spell of rain that lasted about two and a half hours and delivered 4.2 mm.

All in all, I'm on 8.3 mm currently, which is a quarter of the usual for 22 days of July.

Looks like Saturday should change things a bit - possibly with assistance from the Tuesday after.

Not counting on anything big though, as there's already been a considerable reduction in predicted amounts for Sat by GFS in the past day of runs, as part of a general trend to focus the low pressure systems further to the northwest.

Minimum Requirements to be met between 09:00 UTC (10am BST) today and 09:00 UTC (10am BST) on 1 August 2020, and are based on the 1981-2010 average for the current month.

This has been a month which until just a day or so ago, looked certain to go down as being substantially drier than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. However, a really wet last couple of days has now come very close to bringing this month's totals back in line with the 1981-2010 July averages and with the outlook being much more unsettled, there is now a real chance that this month could suddenly out of nowhere, end up being wetter than average in the end, even in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

That is something which was looking very unlikely to happen even at this very same time during yesterday, but this just shows how quickly our weather patterns can change within just a very short period of time.

The 24 hour period which ended at 10am (09:00 UTC) this morning was the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations and at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, it was the wettest day of this summer so far.

There is now a good chance that this month will be wetter than average in the end and even though the forecast rain for the early part of next week has been downgraded by the models to a mostly England only event for now, that might not actually matter in the end with the way that all of this is going just now.

Looking back through my records, I have noticed that we have to go back to July 2018 to find the last time that we had a drier than average summer month at both of those stations so given how this summer has gone so far, it might well have been asking too much for that to happen this month.

Only 20mm on the AWS and 22mm in the gauge here. We've missed any significant rain going since the 27th of June.

Further east we were lucky to get a little more than you did yesterday, I think about 24mm in a plastic gauge, a reasonable proportion of which fell in an hour or so in the early afternoon. Welcome precipitation though. More tonight maybe?

It caused mayhem when I went to pick up my son from work yesterday with holidaymakers not sure what to do apart from drive around the Esplanade in Weymouth or maybe go back to their tent cities or holiday parks. Must have been horrible for them. His manager was effed and cursed too as they have a numbers limit in the store and a proportion of customers seemed not to be aware of Covid 19.

*As it was still raining at the time of this report, the above figures could be higher in the end, than what I have reported here.

There is still a good chance that this month will be wetter than average in the end, in terms of the actual rainfall amounts as it is still raining fairly heavily as I write.

However, that can only realistically happen if we get a fairly sizeable total in the end, for the observation day which has just started as the general trend after today is for it to be gradually become drier or so.

There may well be a few showers over the next couple of days after today but if we don't get a very big total for today's rain event, this could well result in that chance of this month being wetter than average being lost as a result.

Since today is expected to be another official rain day, there shouldn't be any problems with the botanic gardens in Edinburgh being wetter than average during this month in terms of the number of rain days.

For that to happen at Edinburgh Gogarbank though, an additional rain day is likely to be needed from a day where no more than a few showers are forecast, and that might be much more of a struggle to get here.

Up to 90mm after a wet day today. Looking at the forecast I don't think we'll crack the 100mm but it's going to be another wet month to follow June.
