I wonder if the quoted Faversham 38.4c is an hourly reading and not the actual daily max. We can hope anyway.

I was told the Faversham data hasn't been looked at yet. I've not been able to validate the 38.4C that is being casually bandied around. The Met Office don't appear to be mentioning it.

Do the hourly readings not count towards the daily max then ?

Yes if it is the actual max, I'm hoping the actual max is higher and over the record. It's very unlikely but we can hope.

The MetOffice team last night should have clarified the Faversham result that was being quoted in mainstream media.

Its a bit of a shambles. Bedford breaking down and other stations being offline as reported by Rob K.

Perhaps the Met should invest some more money in reporting stations rather than constant revamps of their website, which I have to admit contains less info than ever. But that’s another discussion for another day.

On another note it was wonderful to share in the experience of the day with so many great people on here.

Agree. It's been passed off as fact by a number of people but I've seen nothing at all from the Met about it. In fact I'm still hearing that 38.1C is the expected max for yesterday.

Looking at all the max data from yesterday, although we seem to have just missed out on the all-time record (or tied it, if you discount Brogdale, which when analysed was considered to be unrepresentative by a about 2C!) there must be a good chance that it was the hottest day in England overall in history?

Not sure how you would work that out, but in terms of the widespread heat it was remarkable. Maybe the mean of all weather stations, or of course the more basic CET - was it the record daily CET, anyone?

I don’t think we’ll know that until after 9am.  I’m pretty sure the daily mean is calculated from 9am yesterday to 9am today - not sure if that’s GMT or BST.  I think GW will be the most informed on this.

That'd be GMT - weather obs are always in GMT, to avoid a gap / duplicate obs when we move to and from BST.

I'm eagerly awaiting Brogdale's result, although I expect that 38.4C would be right (it'd be most odd for the Beeb to misreport something like that.)

Brogdale is only a few miles away from me and as it was cloudless most of the day I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it take the maximum temperature recorded yesterday.

Doncaster was offline too at the height of temps, I was surprised my readings had jumped up and wanted to verify with Doncaster but couldn’t.  Poor show and just when it matters most!

Yes!  It really was fantastic to share the experience on here!  Thanks Brian and all TWO members!

That’s good then because temp is still falling here!

EDIT:  Got that the wrong way round!  Doh!  Not so good if the temp is falling before 10:00 BST when the reading will be taken.

With the exception of Brogdale, are there any other sites your aware off that will also report this morning - particularly in the hot zones?

The Met Office are obviously going to take their time to process any reading from Brogdale:

Lots! It'll be any that are marked as manual on the Met Office station map:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-synoptic-and-climate-stations

(and Brogdale's on there, as "Faversham". I suspect the person from the Met Office who replied to that Tweet was unaware of that factoid 😛 )

The reply from that is interesting: "Hi. If you mean Faversham, we no longer have an official observation site at this location. There may still be a weather station, but it isn't ours. Our closest are in Manston and East Malling. ^Dan"

That directly contradicts the map on their own site!

So it looks like the Brogdale/Faversham result wont stand. What a shame.

Cambridge Botanic Garden is a bit of a disaster. The readings will depend on what combination of poly-tunnels, bare earth and six-foot high bushes they happen to have surrounding the station on a particular date.
