A beautiful day with winter sunshine made brighter by the light reflected off the snow although it's melting quite fast.

For anyone who hasn't found this, the current sat image of the UK clearly shows the current snow in the South.

For me it's imby interesting how the snow begins north of Weymouth over the chalk ridgeway, then there seems to be an area North Dorset heading nw into Somerset and the Bristol Channel/Bridgwater area snow free. Exmoor, Dartmoor, Bodmin seem well covered but have a look.

The Poole/Bournemouth conurbation and coast going east is well marked by the absence of snow. And so on... Pompey snow free zone plus ça change.

The Sun is still shining here in Edinburgh and a completely sunny afternoon means that a total of 5.8 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

However, today's rainfall total due to snow melt so far as at 4pm this afternoon was 0.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Today's maximum temperature was 3.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so it's ended up not even being all that cold for this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 3.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A sunny end to the day means that in the end, a total of 6.3 hours of sunshine was recorded for today as this very sunny start to the month goes on.

That has now taken us into a cold and clear evening so far, with an official air frost already being recorded at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was -1.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -2°C at Edinburgh Airport and -2.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Snow showers passing through during last hour here, to my surprise, starting to settle but a subtle change in wind direction from Nly to NWly is pushing the heavier ppn away down the coast, drove to work this morning and 10miles inland there was a good covering while we only had sleety stuff on the coast overnight, currently 0.8degC and 1010mb...

Peach of a day- dazzling sunshine over the remaining snow in the fields, literally twinkling off the white; but at 8am, the sunlight was like liquid copper, giving the rooftops, hedgerows and lanes that Farquarson look.

Yet another rubbish day in East Anglia. Earlier snow showers turned to sleet and rain on another mainly grey, breezy unpleasant day.

Is tonight looking less cold than forecast? Above freezing here and looking around the Country only down to -1C or -2C over the snowfields at midnight.
