The snowfalls which I reported earlier on have moved away and left a fairly decent covering by our normal standards, of around 1cm or so of lying snow.

However, it has remained overcast since then and because of that, the temperatures are refusing to drop due to there being too much cloud around. In fact, the temperatures have actually gone up a bit over the last few hours which meant that the official air frost at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh was very short lived.

I have noticed as well that it looks as though this is causing a thaw to start to place and at this rate, it wouldn't even surprise me if all of our lying snow had disappeared by the time that I get up in the morning.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 1.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport (which is a huge difference from the -7°C which was recorded there just 24 hours ago) and 0.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I was looking at the webcam of Edinburgh castle from the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa. The snow looks heaviest at 20:24, then at 22:31 you see a nice dusting of snow everywhere and by 00:31 it looks as if that dusting of snow/covering has evaporated, Vaporised or melted? - It didn't sleet or rain after the snow you had?

Here is the webcam from the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa -  if you run the time lapse it seems like you had a lovely sunny day!

Meanwhile - Back in Exeter it's not that different +1c here - cloud cover thus preventing temps from falling or a frost!

As I've said before on this forum as well, getting loads of sunshine at this time of the year, doesn't generally mean a great deal to me since I would much rather be getting that during the summer when I am looking for that as part of what determines whether or not, that particular summer goes down as being a decent one.

All too often these days, we get sunnier than average winters only to then find that the following summer is then rather poor and duller than average although last summer was an exception to that rule. Whenever that happens, this then means that the sunniest weather which we get right now in the depths of winter is then being used up and therefore wasted at this time of the year.

Anyway, the wind has now turned round to the north and the skies have finally cleared. With that, you would think that the temperatures would start to drop away once again as a result. Yet that isn't actually happening and now, the temperatures are still refusing to drop due to there being too much wind around (you just couldn't really make that up!!).

Meanwhile, the temperature at 1am this morning was 1.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Here in Edinburgh, there is still a lot of cloud around with only occasional brief sunny spells. There is still some of last night's snowfall lying around as well, although that is now fairly patchy in this part of the city (it might however, still be a better story in the south of Edinburgh and there is at least, still a decent covering on the Pentland Hills).

Last night's minimum temperature was 0.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 0°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, those values were reached very early during yesterday evening.

The skies did clear for a while during the early hours of this morning, but it then clouded over again very soon afterwards. This then meant that the temperature stubbornly refused to drop during the rest of the night as a result of there being too much cloud around, with this resulting in this morning being frost-free here at a time when just about everyone else has been reporting an official air frost in their own area.

As a result of that slight thaw which we have been experiencing though, a total of 0.4 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank due to snow melt, along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9am this morning.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am this morning was 1.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Stunning scenes on top of the north downs. Drove along the ridge above Dorking - Ranmore Common. Snow was clinging to everything, it was like Narnia and the elevation had really helped last night, as all of the snow that fell, had lead to a considerable depth, circa 5 inches in places. A beautiful thick carpet of snow. Back at home, some 100metres lower in elevation and a slushy covering persists.......down in the mole valley, it’s pretty much green.....

This is Sylvan heights and the hill still covered in snow just 2 miles away pass Cowick street towards Kennford.

Now Dartmoor - Princetown SNOW melting but looking lovely! I think Dartmoor had 10 to 12cms of snow.

North Northumberland experienced similar conditions to Edinburgh, an early frost, a heavy snow shower that gave about 1cm cover, then cloud wind and slow thaw though with sunny skies today and low dewpoint it's still lingering in the shade. Could be one more decent frost tonight if the wind drops, then a grim outlook of strong westerlies for weeks - now that thought does leave me cold!

The earlier cloud cover has cleared away to leave us with yet another sunny morning in this part of the world, which means that a total of 1.8 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far as at 12 noon.

In spite of that though and despite the fact that no precipitation has actually fallen here during today so far, today's rainfall total due to snow melt has now increased to 0.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as the slow thaw of lying snow continues.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 2.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where it isn't even all that cold for this time of the year now.

Patches of low cloud and some cirrus; moderate N wind; dry.

No more snow here.  What Deep Powder commented above about the difference in snow amounts depending on the difference in altitude between the North Downs and the Mole Valley applies here.  The Medway valley is green, too.

Fine with lovely winter sunshine. Still that pinch in the air at 4.8 c & 80% h with a moderate north west breeze adding a chill to it when I popped into the town. A vast improvement on yesterday and the early afternoon solar input into my famed west-facing hobby room is increasing with each passing day.
