I am expecting this thread to be quiet to begin with at least because as well as being in a very cold spell just now, we are also in an exceptionally dry spell of weather here. However, some parts of the country are either getting some snow just now, or have had it very recently. This means that the earliest posts on here may well be about the rainfall equivalent of the amount of snow which that particular member has had, which is usually the amount of rainfall which is recorded as snow melt.

I'm not expecting too many reports on that, but I would expect everything to get a bit busier here next week if it turns milder and wetter in the manner in which the models are pointing towards just now. However big or small your rainfall amounts are though during this final month of the meteorological winter, this is the very place to report that.

Here in Edinburgh, we now have the first officially recorded rainfall of this month despite the fact that it has been completely sunny here all day today so far as I write.

That amounts to 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 1pm this afternoon which is probably due to snow melt and/or condensation, with nothing at all so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Just 3.5 mm so far .. February is the driest month of the year here on average at 53 mm. We'll see how an active Atlantic will influence that - not a lot from it's first offering!

In the end, a total of 0.6 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 0.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this takes the total for this month so far to 10.2 mm, the total for this winter so far to 58.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 20.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this takes the total for this month so far to 10.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 56.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 22.6 mm as at 8am this morning.

So far, this month hasn't been anything like as dry here as what last month was and at Edinburgh Gogarbank, there has already been as much rain (with some of that falling as snow) during the first week of this month, as what there was during the entire month of January.

This is in complete contrast to last year when January was the wettest month of last winter and our only wetter than average month of last winter, with last February then being substantially drier than average thus making that month, our driest month of last winter.

That is clearly going to be the other way around this time with the key difference being that no matter how unsettled the weather actually is these days, we just cannot get a situation in place where any given month is running wetter than average, as the amounts of rain which we are getting for most of the time, are usually always very small if anything at all.

That is in complete contrast to the rest of the UK which of course, never seems to have any such problems with getting a significant rainfall total (at least, if you go by what is reported here).
