Cloudy and overcast with a lot of dampness around, although it's not actually raining just now.

In the end, a total of 0.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

As a result of there being too much cloud around, the temperatures are still refusing to drop. The temperatures have actually been rising throughout the day since yesterday morning, and are still continuing to slowly go up. This means that the temperature at two of my three local stations were actually higher at midnight than what they have been at any point in time during yesterday, so it is clearly a lot milder just now than what it was 24 hours ago.

With that in mind, the temperature at midnight had now gone up to 5.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

So much then, for this so-called "cold" spell which we are meant to be in just now.

This morning has started off on another mostly cloudy note with just the odd isolated shower. Just a short while ago, there was a few gaps in that cloud and the experience of the last month or so has shown that there hasn't been any day during this period where there has been at least some gaps in that cloud to begin with, which has then gone on to be completely sunless even though those gaps may have been very few and far between.

It is those days where there has been no gaps in that cloud to begin with which have then gone on to be completely sunless and it is because there has only been two days like that in this time, that there has only been two completely sunless days in that time. However, two of the previous four days going into today have been completely sunless and since there are no gaps in that cloud as I write, we can't rule out the possibility of today being completely sunless as well even though there was a few gaps in that cloud to begin with.

Anyway, these isolated showers have resulted in 0.2 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Those are very small amounts, but they are enough to confirm that today is now the sixth day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry at either of those stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 4.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There is still a lot of cloud around with nothing in the way of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. However, a few gaps have appeared in that cloud and the sky has a slightly brighter look to it than what it had at this time yesterday. Because of that, I am still hopeful that today might yet end up not being a completely sunless day in the end although I'm not expecting any decent amounts of sunshine to be recorded during this afternoon either.

That is particularly true since there has also still been the odd spot of rain around and as at 12 noon, a total of 0.2 mm of rain had been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 4.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so no official air frost this time.

Today is also a bit milder than yesterday and so, the temperature at 12 noon was 7.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In many ways, this has been a very frustrating afternoon because there has been quite a few areas of blue sky around and yet, none of them have been in the right place for us to able to see anything of the Sun at any point in time. The end result of this is that once again, nothing in the way of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

This means that after going for such a long period during this month without a single completely sunless day, we have now just had two back to back sunless days over the last couple of days. Today is therefore, our third sunless day of this month and the fifth sunless day day of this autumn. This also means that three out of the last five days have now been completely sunless so that our chances of this month going down as being sunnier than average overall are now, starting to run into a bit of trouble here.

On the positive side though, there has been no further additions to today's rainfall totals so far.

Today's maximum temperature was 7.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so today was slightly milder than yesterday.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 7.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Nothing positive to say about the abhorrent conditions endured here on Bleak Friday. The wettest day yet with 13.8mm and completely sunless again. This year has now recorded the highest number of sunless days since 2014 with over five weeks still to go.

5.8C min last night followed by 6.7C giving the most pitiful diurnal range yet. Also just one night away from recording the longest run without going below 5C so late in the season. There were seven nights in late Nov/early Dec 2006 which has now been equalled.

Heavy showers some with hail passing through as the low to our SW pushes bands through Cornwall and Devon. 8.7c light E wind.

Earlier today at around 11.45am we had quite an active tough pass through with plenty of fork lightening and 2cm of hail. The temp went from 11.1c to 6.4 in the heaviest of the downpour. One house got struck by lightning on the Lizard and caught fire, unfortunately it could not be saved early reports are saying the solar panels on the roof seem to be where the strike happened.
