Very cold for the time of year, and frosty as well. Tonight has been mostly clear as well although there is now a bit more in the way of cloud cover.

As a result of a few showers which were around during the evening, a total of 0.2 mm of rain was recorded during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was -2.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A very cold and frosty morning here in Edinburgh with an official air frost at all three of my local stations, although this also means that today is starting off on a bright and mostly sunny note with only fairly small amounts of cloud at times.

At the moment, the temperatures at two of my three local stations has not yet reached their overnight minimum values although it did get as low as -7°C at Edinburgh Airport which is incredibly cold for so early in the season, especially when you consider that the temperature at that station never got all that much lower than that at any time during the whole of last winter.

Having said that though, we do occasionally get summer-like weather as early in the year as April which means that on that basis, there is also no reason why we can't equally be getting winter-like weather (such as what we are seeing just now) at this time of the year in October although personally, it would have actually been better if this cold weather had been saved for the actual winter (preferably at some time around Christmas) rather than us getting all of that just now as there has been many years in the past where that has then ended up being "it" for our winter.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was -4.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -6°C at Edinburgh Airport and -2.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Min of -3.1 here, near Wooler, lowest I've recorded anywhere in October since 1997 and by far the lowest (-0.7) in my 5 year record here, where any form of westerly wind is relentless and for much of the year an easterly brings low cloud.

A mostly completely sunny last few hours means that a total of 3.8 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

In addition to that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon. Since this has occurred within what was also a completely sunny hour there though, I can only imagine that this was probably just due to condensation rather than any actual rainfall.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -4.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -7°C at Edinburgh Airport and -2.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which clearly makes last night, the coldest night of the autumn so far by some considerable distance and it wouldn't even surprise me if we don't even get too many nights during the actual winter which are colder than that.

Over the last few hours, the temperatures have shot up by quite a lot but because it was so cold to begin with, it's still rather cold for the time of year even after that.

Consequently, the temperature at 12 noon was 7.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Fair & dry with sunny spells and partial cloud. There were some showers about earlier on today but they all bypassed my location so the rain gauge still stands at 0.0 mm since 12 am.

10.5 c & 69% h but the brisk nor'easter is taking the edge off it.

An almost completely sunny afternoon means that a total of 7.6 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon. At this time of year, that should now be close to the final total for today. However, the hour between 3pm and 4pm was completely sunny which suggests that the final total for today might not quite have been reached for today just yet.

Today's maximum temperature was 7.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 6.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Min of 1.1C and max of 7.2C with more disgusting cold rain showers. Cloud and rank SE wind ensuring yet another night of frost free gunk and static temperatures lies ahead here in the most boring place on earth for a weather observer to live.

A sunny day near Wooler, with a brief fogging up this morning and a few attractive puffy cumulus clouds this afternoon. Exceptionally low max for the time of year - just 5.6C, and with clear skies and calm conditions it's already down to 0.5C.
