Starting cold and wet but most of the week looks increasingly warm and dry away from western Scotland where it will be exceptionally wet from Sun-Tue.

Great stuff Gavin P. Thanks - what an interesting October this is becoming.

Thank you for the thoughts Gavin .  A week of ups and downs for Autumnal weather. 

Great synopsis Gavin; thanks. As GW said on the October thread, there could be some date record risk ahead.

I just wish that I could agree with that (although I do thank Gavin P. for some great content once again) because in this part of the world, this has to be the most boring spell of weather and the most boring month of October which I have ever experienced in terms of our weather. If the last model output is correct, this is just going to get even more monotonous and tedious over time as well.

On one hand, it would be great to get a cold winter and yea, that would make it really interesting in that respect if we still have high pressure hanging around here in December. However, that will depend very much on the exact position of that high pressure, so that isn't going to to do us any favours if we end up getting stuck on the mild side of that block as we were in the winter of 2016/17.

Apart from that, recent history tells us that it's usually always mild in December anyway (with only the odd exception that rule) and as far as I'm concerned, we could really do with seeing some much needed rainfall in this part of the world.

We're looking at ENSO, SST's, Scandinavian/Siberian snow cover, solar activity and winters that follow Septembers with CET's around 13.7.
