The Sun is still shining here in Edinburgh at the moment as I write, and this has now created quite a big landmark here as a total of 7.6 hours of sunshine have been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon. This means that this month will now go down as a sunnier than average month overall as the total number of hours of sunshine during this month so far is now more than the 1981-2010 June average for that station.

What makes this even more amazing is the fact that this will be going down as a sunnier than average summer month which tends to something of a rarity these days in this modern era of the Great British summer, and this was something which was looking very unlikely to happen just a week or so ago.

However, the east coast has started to creep as as well, as I write and over time, it might end up being a bit of a struggle to add much more to today's sunshine total because of that.

Today's maximum temperatures were 23.9ºC in Jerry's neck of the woods at Swanston (which I've included as a sort of fourth local station for now, just to show the variations in temperature across the city under this easterly wind), 22.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 20ºC at Edinburgh Airport and just 18.2ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

From that, Jerry's prediction for 25ºC in his area hasn't quite come unless he has recorded that himself on his own readings, whereas his predictions for this part of Edinburgh where I am (as represented by the temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh) have been largely correct to the nearest 1ºC.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 22.4ºC at Swanston, 21.1ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 16.0ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The sun fully won the battle by noon. Since then its been cloudless. A moderate NE'ly wind has restricted today's maximum temperature to 21.1c. The haar lurks about 15 miles out to sea in the Dover Strait.

19.6c currently.

Beautiful evening in London. A Mediterranean glow to the light.

Despite that though it’s 24C at Heathrow where I’ve just landed and a “chilly” 20C at London City close to where I live. Not sure that’s even sitting-out-without-a-jumper temperature.

John, I recorded 24 C here same as Swanston. I've been down in the Borders walking today where it was more like 28 C.

Your figures really do illustrate the differences in this city in an easterly. What will tomorrow bring? A bit warmer here perhaps? Talk of 31 C in Glasgow!

Here in Edinburgh, the east coast haar threatened to really close in at around 5pm but the strong June sunshine has continued to hold that off and now, that haar has lifted again so that a total of 10.6 hours of sunshine has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm this evening.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 21.9ºC at Swanston, 17.7ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 14.9ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

As you have said, this shows the wide variations across Edinburgh under an easterly at this time of year and if if there was another station at location such as Leith Docks which is even closer to the coast, I'm sure that the readings for there would show it to be even cooler during the day than the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which is at least, a little bit further inland from there.

Despite the dull and overcast start to today, a sunny end to the day led to a total of 12.2 hours of sunshine being recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This makes today, the fourth sunniest day of the summer so far as well as officially confirming this month's status as a sunnier than average month overall.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 10pm tonight was 16.4ºC at Swanston, 13.8ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 13.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
