Ben Rich's update on BBC:

explains why UV levels are higher than we would normally expect at this time of year. The late-winter ozone depletion that is normally focused north of us (for example over the Norwegian Sea) has migrated south for the time being. Hence the amazing readings today. Although 5 is forecast over the weekend, with a 5.4 already achieved in Reading, we might get a notch higher than that- 5.5 rounding to 6 of course. That would be something.
