4.0 - hurray! And boy did it feel it- after a 20 mile cycle ride and an hour and a half digging out a deep-rooted shrub, I am a lobster.

Reading 4.2-4.3 with a double peak above 4; tops. That equates to a 4.4 I reckon down here.

4.6; smashed the best. 4.8 in Camborne. 4.6 must rate among the best in Reading for the first week in April- possibly the best on recent record.

I've just seen the Helen Willetts video on the BBC website: unusually high UV levels this weekend - bordering on high she said (high is 6: not known in my records in early April). Met office has UV3 at 10am on Sunday.

UV 4.6 today but 5 forecasted this weekend.

An unbelievable 5.4 from Reading today; I eat my own words from yesterday. This has to be a record from April week 1. I'm going to scroll back through the archive and check. This lifted the temperature from near ground frost this morning to 18C.

Ben Rich's update on BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/39527908

explains why UV levels are higher than we would normally expect at this time of year. The late-winter ozone depletion that is normally focused north of us (for example over the Norwegian Sea) has migrated south for the time being. Hence the amazing readings today. Although 5 is forecast over the weekend, with a 5.4 already achieved in Reading, we might get a notch higher than that- 5.5 rounding to 6 of course. That would be something.

UV doesn't effect the temperature.

Correct; that was incorrectly expressed.  I meant the strong, unbroken sunshine (which affected the high UV) also affected the temperature- independently of course. I think I just got excited by the UV level and forgot to be precise about the details.

UV curve is currently fractionally steeper than yesterday- one to watch.

Doesn't surprise me. I was in the garden for most of the day yesterday, and got sunburnt...

My nose can attest to this.
