Another day, another jump north - with an 8 popping up in Aberdeenshire!

Can anyone beat that in terms of northerly 8s?

Just got an alert to say that we could see record UV levels today.

Can anyone explain why this record could be broken?

I get it’s sunny and we have just past the solstice. But I assume we have had similar conditions before.

This is largely down to ozone depletion this last winter. The record strong polar vortex led to the worst ozone hole ever in this hemisphere. This despite the fact stratospheric ozone globally is starting to recover from its decades long decline.

We have a particularly holey bit over us at the moment, plus it’s clear and midsummer.

Pollution down, but levels have been picking up in recent days so I doubt that’s a big contributor. I can see an urban smog line over London this week for the first time in a while.

Matt Taylor just said the very same on BBC forecast.

The Beeb has an article about it all here. Nothing new, but interesting to see in the mainstream media.

9s are gone from the map today, but both Lerwick and Sell Ness in Shetland are offered 7s!

The 8s seem to have condensed for the time being, but there are still 9s forecast tomorrow in the Channel isles:

FWIW, there was an 8 on the forecast for Kent today, including Leysdown - it only appeared in the forecast late yesterday. One of those deceptive days, as the wind and low humidity would have made it not feel as strong!

Chilton has managed four 8+ this month, with 8.8 yesterday; Camborne just reached 9 today.

Due to distancing rules at the wolf centre (max of 6 people), I can't get there that often - luckily for me last time I was there (early July) it was cloudy. I'm not there again until August and I'll be hoping it's cloudy again.

I've never been burnt at the wolf centre though, even in years past, as I use factor 50 sunblock. Luckily it doesn't seem to distract the wolves, it must reek to them!

Quite exceptional for the end of July, 8s forecast up to Oxon and Herts on Thursday, still 8s on Friday. Will we get a first August 8?

Despite yesterday being quite gloomy there was a brief bright spell just after midday and I recorded a figure of 7.3.

Will be interesting to see if an 8+ figure is reached later this week.

I haven't checked all my data for this year but it looks like I have only exceeded a reading of 8 once which was 8.1 on 16 July.

Camborne 8.7 and 8.3 yesterday & today.

Chilton 8.6 both days.

Reading lower yesterday, but 7.7 today.

Last days of VH.

Well, Chilton managed an 8, just, on 1st and 5th.

Chilton managed a 7 today, which is very late. First one since 7th, and before that a 7.5 on 6th.

Two weeks from now 6 will be unlikely.
