Not Gardeners' World or Farmers Weekly.

I'm lost for words when I read these stories. They are not one offs either.

Talking of large vegetables, I have just come back from a walk around Kew Gardens where they are in the process of having a very rare flowering of a Mountain Agave. It has thrown up a 5m long spike which will eventually produce a rash of flowers.

Apparently the flowers will not appear till next Spring as it will be dormant over the Winter

Sadly immediately after producing the flowers the whole plant will have used up all its saved resources and die

I assume Martin you have a ticket that allows you access to the Gardens out of hours or sort of.

Love the pictures (and contrails).

Nice steady drought-busting rain now falling. I rushed around yesterday to prepare the ground and sow grass seed to repair the bare patch on the lawn. It should germinate nicely as the ground is still warm, and prevent the area becoming a foxglove jungle, invading from the borders. The patch in question is the bit that never gets any shade from trees; the other parts get shade for at least some of the day and have recovered fairly well with recent light rain and cooler temps.

Amazing how the fig tree leaves have turned yellow and are dropping off in just over three days. I think it's a light factor that encourages this. Still a handful of semi-ripe fruits that I'll leave for the birds that have begun to take a liking to them.

I've given up the fight against box blight and moths and will begin to remove my box hedges today.

I'll bag up the material and see what the people at the tip suggest. I'm sure they'll suggest the garden waste skip.

Box blight spores last six years in the ground, so will municipal composting kill them off? I have my doubts.

Removal opens the ground for a new project by reducing the lawn size and making space for an edging of Japanese forest grasses, perhaps and ferns.

A satisfactory morning - mowed the lawn - quite gently - but enough to make it look half decent. There are still dead patches from the dry summer. We've done some reseeding and the "No Mow May" section has a lot of wild stuff that has settled in nicely. Notably cowslips. There's leaf fall yet to come, of course. and the grass is still growing so there will be more to do before I put the mower to bed for the winter. Our Green bin is half full. There's a Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union fungus foray this Sunday. Should be entertaining - but I've not noted many species yet. Still - a walk in the woods is always a treat. 🍄🍄🍄
