I've seen some photos and claims on twitter that the cloud above was a funnel cloud, but i think it was just the slightly different angle that the photo was taken from.  Your photo shows it at an angle which easily disproves the claims

Yes i know who you are referring to there, i read the same gargabe, it was certainly not a funnel cloud, as i watched it slowly grow as it came along from the west.

It looks convective but it wasnt.

Still some large snow patches visible on The Gorms

I took more or less exatcly the same photos in the same spot in late June / early July 2010, should dig them out and do a snow patch comparison. I think I recall there was only one snow patch on mine the wind blown ridge one on the far left.

Yesterday 14/7/14 there was still several large snow patches visible, maybe this year they will never disappear.

It would be very unusual for the patches visible from the valley to survive though those on Braeriach rarely melt. This year there are patches surviving to mid July in many parts of the Highlands even on sub 3000 feet hills as far South as below Loch Tay. This is despite the warm Spring and early Summer.  

Continuing warmth will put paid to these in the next few weeks though but ther could be a number of surprise survivals if the weather turns and the new season snows come early. [The earliest lasting snow that  know of was in 1976 following the hot Summer. It came to the high Cairngorms in the second week of September that year.

Yes i agree, they will have a tough time over the coming weeks to survive but after the very snowy season there is a good chance they may, i was up there the other week and the patches may look small from Aviemore they are very vast once close to them and very deep and frozen.

I was laid on the beach at Loch Morlich in 26c yetserday looking at the snow patches which still are quite large

Still some surprisingly big patches on the Drumochter Hills too:

Aye, I was very surprised by the snow fields on the Drumochter hills - the picture above was taken some miles north from Cluny last Friday and doesn't really do them justice.  They are below 3,000ft in NNW facing gullies.

ps no clegs about yetserday, they appear in the evenings.

Ahh now that is how it was in late June 2010 when I was there, with just the two patches left.

They are still there but shrinking!

Err that doesn't alter that facts that snow can fall on any given day in the highlands though.😉

'The Highlands' i don't think so, on the top of The Cairngorm peaks yes but not lower down, even here in Carrbridge at 900ft snow has not fallen in July/August according to locals.

People seem to forget The Highlands (my home) covers a vast area, with a fair bit of it being near sea level.

It is noteworthy but not exceptional.
