UK Outlook for Tuesday 8 May 2018 to Thursday 17 May 2018:

Tuesday will be mainly fine and dry, with a good deal of sunshine and feeling rather warm for many. However, there may be some coastal mist and fog at times, where it will be cooler. The far northwest may be cloudier with some rain and strong winds. There is the low risk of some thunderstorms moving up from the near continent in the south by midweek. Thereafter, a northwest/southeast split seems most likely, although with increasing uncertainty. As such, the north and west are likely to see strong winds and spells of rain at times, interspersed with drier and brighter spells. The rest of the UK is likely to see plenty of settled weather. Temperatures are likely to be above normal in the south, but near normal elsewhere.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 May 2018 to Friday 1 Jun 2018:

Generally mixed conditions are expected for the rest of May, which will give some further dry spells as well as shorter more changeable periods of weather, with rain or showers becoming more widespread. A slow moving and blocked pattern will probably dominate, with any spells of Atlantic weather generally short-lived, these mostly affecting the north and west. Some warm and thundery spells are also possible during the second half of May, perhaps going on into early June. Temperatures overall will probably be slightly above the average, although there are likely to marked variations in temperatures, depending on any influence from Atlantic weather systems during the period.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 9 May 2018 to Friday 18 May 2018:

Bands of rain or showers are likely to push eastwards across the UK on Wednesday with some heavier bursts likely at times. The odd isolated thunderstorm is also possible in the far east. Brighter, showery conditions are likely to follow into the west late Wednesday and into Thursday. Probably starting warm and humid in the east at first, before temperatures return to nearer normal. Thereafter, a northwest/southeast split seems most likely, although with increasing uncertainty. As such, the north and west are likely to see strong winds and spells of rain at times, interspersed with drier and brighter spells. Plenty of settled weather is likely elsewhere, with the risk of thunderstorms in the south at times. Temperatures are likely to be above normal in the south, but near normal elsewhere.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 May 2018 to Saturday 2 Jun 2018:

Generally mixed conditions are expected for the rest of May, which will give some further dry spells as well as shorter more changeable periods of weather, with rain or showers becoming more widespread. A slowly changing weather pattern will probably dominate, with any spells of Atlantic weather generally short-lived, these mostly affecting the north and west. Some warm and thundery spells are also possible during the second half of May, perhaps going on into early June. Temperatures overall will probably be slightly above the average, although there are likely to be marked variations in temperatures, depending on any influence from Atlantic weather systems during the period.

UK Outlook for Thursday 10 May 2018 to Saturday 19 May 2018:

Thursday will be showery and breezy in the northwest, whilst elsewhere there'll be a good deal of fine weather with sunny spells. By Friday some longer spells of rain may arrive into the west, while the far southeast may see isolated heavy showers. Probably starting warm in the southeast at first, before temperatures return to nearer normal. Thereafter, a northwest / southeast split in the weather seems most likely, although with increasing uncertainty. The north and west are likely to see strong winds and spells of rain at times, interspersed with drier and brighter spells. Drier and more settled weather is likely elsewhere, with a risk of thunderstorms in the south at times. Temperatures may be initially below normal, but will recover to close to average.

UK Outlook for Sunday 20 May 2018 to Sunday 3 Jun 2018:

Confidence in the forecast detail through this period is low, but generally mixed conditions are expected for the rest of May and the start of June. There are likely to be some further dry spells as well as shorter more changeable periods of weather, with rain or showers becoming more widespread. Weather patterns will probably only change slowly, with any spells of wetter and windier Atlantic weather only short lived, and mainly affecting the north and west. Some warm and thundery spells are also possible before the end of May. Temperatures overall will probably be slightly above the average, although there are likely to be marked variations in temperatures, depending on any influence from Atlantic weather systems during the period.

BBC monthly outlook

Saturday 5 May—Sunday 13 May

A dry and warm Bank Holiday but cooler by midweek

Western and northern Scotland will often be cloudy on Saturday with occasional light rain or drizzle and hill fog, while banks of low cloud and mist may affect western Britain at times. Elsewhere, it will be warm with light winds and lots of sunshine. Over the next few days, high pressure will dominate, so there will be a lot of dry weather but north and north-west Scotland will have a chance of rain on Sunday and perhaps again on Tuesday, with occasionally fresh winds. However, much of the country will be dry and warm with lots of sunshine and temperatures perhaps reaching 26 or 27C in the south-east on Monday and Tuesday.

After the high pressure and warm weather this weekend and early next week, a return to a west or south-westerly airflow from the Atlantic can be expected later in the week. Frontal systems, bringing bands of cloud and rain will attempt to invade the country from the north-west, perhaps bringing some remnant cloud and patchy rain into south-east England at times too. The wettest and windiest weather, as well as coolest temperatures, will be reserved for Scotland, with temperatures around or perhaps slightly above average elsewhere. By the weekend, it looks like high pressure will attempt to build across the southern half of the country from the south-west, attempting to bring drier conditions, although there is still the potential for some showers or patchy frontal rain to affect western Britain for a time. Temperatures will still remain around average.

Monday 14 May—Sunday 20 May

High pressure dominating - dry, settled and warm

During the beginning of the following week, high pressure is expected to ridge towards the UK from the south-west; there are then robust signals for high pressure to dominate through the middle of May, not just across the UK but across much of northern Europe and Scandinavia too. Such a 'blocking' high pressure area often becomes very stubborn to move anywhere very fast, and this certainly looks to be the case. There will be a lot of dry weather with light winds too, with Atlantic fronts kept at bay well to the north and west of the UK. The only meaningful rainfall may come from slow-moving thunderstorms edging towards the UK from the near Continent. These may produce locally torrential downpours across southern, and perhaps at times, central areas but many areas are expected to remain dry. Therefore, this does give a risk of some heavy, thundery showers for the Royal Wedding on the 19th although statistically speaking there is still a greater chance of it remaining dry. Some early morning mist may develop at times inland although this should soon dissipate once the Sun rises. Additionally, temperatures are expected to be above average for the entire country. The warmest spots will be in the south, where already warm air will waft in our direction from France, Germany and the Low Countries. There is a small chance of some low cloud and mist lapping at North Sea coasts of northern England and eastern Scotland, should winds veer a little more to the north-east, although this appears unlikely at present.

Monday 21 May—Sunday 3 June

High pressure still firmly in the driving seat.

The pattern of high pressure dominance across the UK and much of N Europe is expected to continue, with current indication for the centre of the high to drift east from Scandinavia towards the UK. Low pressure areas and associated rain bands are likely to remain well to the south of the UK. The greatest risk of thundery showers or thunderstorms would remain across the southern half of the UK, where high pressure is expected to have less of an influence and a rather summer-like pattern of convective precipitation may develop here. Somewhat breezier conditions may develop at times across southern Britain too, as an easterly airflow blows around the southern periphery of the high. Often fine and settled weather with light winds can be expected for much of northern Britain, while temperatures are likely to be above average for most of the country. How warm it will get depends on a fine balance between the wind direction and wind strength - any easterly wind flow will likely bring cooler temperatures, especially to eastern Britain, as the waters of the North Sea typically remain rather cold well into May. Model ensembles suggest a 25% chance of low pressure located close to Iceland becoming more influential, allowing a cooler and more 'progressive' westerly airflow from the Atlantic to move across the UK. This would bring wetter, windier and cloudier conditions for most. However, the signal from the models over the last few weeks has been remarkably consistent with high pressure dominating for much of May - and so it would be tough to be against them.

UK Outlook for Saturday 12 May 2018 to Monday 21 May 2018:

Rain in the east at first on Saturday will soon clear eastwards, then the rest of the weekend will be rather unsettled with sunshine and widespread showers. Some of the showers could be locally heavy with hail and thunder, and some more persistent spells of rain are possible at times too. Temperatures most likely below average, but feeling warm in any sunnier periods. Through the rest of this period there is a large degree of uncertainty in the forecast detail and while there may be some drier and more settled spells, showers or longer spells of rain a likely at times in the northwest, and with a chance of some persistent rain in southern areas at times too. Temperatures initially below normal, but will recover to around normal.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 22 May 2018 to Tuesday 5 Jun 2018:

Confidence in the forecast detail through this period is low, but generally mixed conditions are expected for the rest of May and the start of June. There are likely to be some further dry spells as well as shorter more changeable periods of weather, with rain or showers becoming more widespread. Weather patterns will probably only change slowly, with any spells of wetter and windier Atlantic weather only short lived, and mainly affecting the north and west. Some warm and thundery spells are also possible, especially across the south and east. Temperatures overall will probably be slightly above normal, with the potential for some very warm spells in the south.

UK Outlook for Sunday 13 May 2018 to Tuesday 22 May 2018:

Changeable to end the weekend with a mixture of showers and some longer spells of rain, as well as some drier and brighter weather. Showers will be heavy with a risk of hail and thunder, whilst more organised spells of rain are most likely to be across eastern and northeastern areas. Temperatures will remain on the cool side for many through Sunday, although becoming somewhat warmer into Monday. Through the middle of May there is low confidence in the forecast but there are signs that it may turn drier and more settled at times. Despite this, there remains the possibility of some mixed weather with rain or showers, perhaps most frequent across the northwest and far southeast. Temperatures are likely to become generally above average, with some warm spells possible.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 May 2018 to Wednesday 6 Jun 2018:

Confidence in the forecast detail through this period is low, but generally mixed conditions are expected for the remainder of May and into the start of June. The weather patterns will probably only change slowly, so this is likely to bring periods of dry weather, interspersed with shorter, more changeable spells with showery rain. There remains the risk that southern and eastern areas could see some thundery spells too. Overall, temperatures will probably be above normal, but there remains a risk for further very warm weather especially around thundery spells. Despite this, there could be some large contrasts across the UK from day to day.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 15 May 2018 to Thursday 24 May 2018:

The outlook is set to begin with rather mixed conditions; often cloudy with some rain or showers but also some bright and sunny spells for some. Winds will be light or moderate, meaning that any showers could be slow moving and heavy in places, but the distribution of these is uncertain at this point. By the end of the week there is low confidence in any detail, but similar mixed conditions are likely to prevail. Temperatures are likely to be around normal, or perhaps warm at times but there may be some contrasts across the UK and perhaps day to day. Towards the end of the period it is possible that relatively benign conditions could become established.

UK Outlook for Friday 25 May 2018 to Friday 8 Jun 2018:

Relatively benign conditions could become established towards the end of May with slow moving weather patterns. Some shorter, more changeable periods may bring rain at times; these more likely in western areas. Showery periods are also possible, and possibly thundery; especially in the south and east. Temperatures may be above normal with the potential for further warm spells, however the confidence overall is low.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 16 May 2018 to Friday 25 May 2018:

Rain in the northwest early on Wednesday clearing southeast to leave brighter and showery conditions, mainly in the northwest, where it'll be windy for a time. Otherwise a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells for many, which will persist into Thursday and Friday. Into the weekend and next week, we are likely to see a northwest/southeast split developing. In the northwest probably unsettled, with rain or showers, but also some drier and brighter interludes. Elsewhere, whilst some rain is possible at times, overall a good deal of dry and bright weather around. There is the low risk of some heavy showers and thunderstorms spreading north from the near continent in the southeast later. Temperatures generally near normal, but locally rather warm in the south, probably more widely later.

UK Outlook for Saturday 26 May 2018 to Saturday 9 Jun 2018:

During the end of the May, we are likely to continue to see a northwest/southeast split in the weather across the UK. Staying unsettled in the northwest, with occasional rain and showers at times, but also some drier and brighter intervals. Elsewhere, a good deal of dry weather is likely, although some rain is possible at times. As we go into early June, confidence is low, although we are probably going to see generally more unsettled conditions, with periods of rain or showers, these possibly becoming more frequent and widespread. Temperatures probably overall near or slightly above the normal, with the potential for further very warm spells of weather, particularly in late-May.

BBC monthly outlook

Saturday 12 May—Wednesday 16 May

Some rain but drier to start the week

Western areas will see the best of the dry and sunny weather this weekend especially across southwest England and Northern Ireland. With light winds, it will feel pleasant in the sunshine but with temperatures a little below the average for the time of year. Rain on a waving weather front will threaten more northern and eastern parts of the UK. On Monday, the last of the weekend's rain is expected to ease from north-eastern Britain and although there may be some lingering cloud across central and eastern areas for a time, much of the country can expect to have a dry afternoon with spells of sunshine and light winds. Tuesday will see a cool north or northwesterly airflow although there is a risk of a developing frontal system bringing more widespread rain to Scotland with a band of patchy rain perhaps sinking into northern England later. Further south, it will remain dry and warm with sunny periods.
High pressure is then expected to remain just to the west of the UK on Wednesday but there is the small threat of some rain sliding south-east across southern or central Britain for a time. Many other areas will have a dry day although it will feel on the cool side with a north to north-westerly airflow continuing.

Thursday 17 May—Wednesday 23 May

Pressure building but some rain in the north

The latter half of the week will see high pressure ridge toward the UK from the southwest, with the high more likely to reside across the southern half of the country. This means that a mild west or southwesterly airflow will develop, especially across northern areas.

There will be the risk of some weakening Atlantic fronts moving into northern Britain from the west, perhaps followed by a scattering of showers and rather cool westerly flows. However, high pressure is expected to remain more dominant across southern Britain and temperatures here are more likely to remain above average for the time of year, as light winds and good periods of sunshine readily help to heat the ground.
Prospects are looking relatively good for the Royal Wedding on the 19th, with a largely dry picture looking likely and perhaps on the warm side too. The main risk of rain would come from any weakening fronts bringing increasingly light and patchy rain from the northwest.

Into the start of the following week, high pressure is expected to become centred to the northeast of the UK and Scandinavia. Therefore, largely dry conditions with light winds are more likely, as Atlantic fronts remain well to the north and west of the UK.

Some rather warm east or southeasterly airflows may also develop, perhaps pushing temperatures up when aided by the May sunshine.

Thursday 24 May—Wednesday 6 June

A warm end to May but wetter risks early June

Through the last week of May, the atmosphere right across Europe will be dominated by slow-moving areas of low and high pressure and fortune will favour the UK as there continues to be a good signal for a 'blocking' area of high pressure to dominate the weather across not just the UK, but most of northern Europe and Scandinavia too.

With low pressure areas more likely to linger close to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, largely dry and warm weather will develop for the UK. Strong sunshine, light winds and a lack of cloud cover will allow temperatures to rise several degrees for most and there is a good chance of a warm or very warm spell of weather developing.

One or two breezier days can be expected across southern Britain and with the warmth comes the inevitable risk of some heavy showers or thunderstorms breaking out.

Even so, much of the country will still experience largely dry conditions during this time with only a minority of locations in the south likely to experience a downpour.

Early indications suggest that the start of June will see an area of low pressure close to Iceland, giving a broad south-westerly airflow for much of the country, with spells of patchy frontal rain perhaps encroaching into northern Britain in particular. The good news is that high pressure has a good chance of ridging towards the country from the south-west, and so any Atlantic fronts across northern Britain are likely to dissipate as they run into the high pressure further south.Temperatures around or just above average in general, although any warmth may be interspaced with brief cooler shots of north-westerly air. If any sustained warmth can build, particularly across southern Britain, then there will come a threat of some heavy showers developing during the days. However, ensemble guidance also suggests a 40-45% risk for an alternate scenario of low pressure moving closer to the UK, bringing a cooler and breezier westerly.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 May 2018 to Monday 28 May 2018:

Saturday will start off cool across much of the UK, perhaps cold enough for a slight rural frost in some places. However, it is likely to stay dry for most and we are expecting plenty of warm sunshine. Sunday will be very similar, but cloudier in the northwest with an increasing chance of rain later. There will probably be a reasonable amount of dry and sunny weather into the following week. However, the west and northwest will probably be more changeable with occasional rain or showers. The driest and sunniest conditions will therefore probably be in the east and southeast. Temperatures will generally be warm or possibly locally very warm, with a chance of cooler conditions developing from the west or northwest later.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 May 2018 to Tuesday 12 Jun 2018:

The end of May could well stay mostly dry and warm in the south and east of the UK and there is the potential for some very warm spells here. It will probably be less settled and less warm in the north and west, with occasional rain and showers at times, but also some drier and brighter intervals. Signals are less clear for the start of June, although unsettled weather seems more likely generally, with periods of rain or showers perhaps becoming more frequent and widespread, and temperatures returning to near or slightly above normal.

UK Outlook for Sunday 20 May 2018 to Tuesday 29 May 2018:

Fine for many on Sunday with warm sunny spells and light winds. Probably cloudier and cooler in the far north and west with the chance of some patchy rain. Thereafter, there looks to be plenty of dry weather around, but overall it will start to turn more changeable, especially in the west or northwest. This brings a greater risk of showers or longer spells of rain, which could be heavy and thundery at times. As a result, the south and east will often be drier and sunnier, although there still remains the risk of some showery rain. Temperatures will probably be close to or just above average for late May, but there may be some marked daily variations with chilly nights, but also some cooler days under cloud and rain.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 30 May 2018 to Wednesday 13 Jun 2018:

The end of May, could well remain mostly dry and warm in the south and south east, with the potential for some very warm spells, which may also lead to brief periods of thundery rain. Further north and west, it will perhaps be more changeable, and this could spread more widely across the country as we head into June, bringing more frequent spells of cloud and rain. It is still likely that southern areas could see some settled spells, and overall temperatures are probably going to be near to just above average throughout.
