I don't know about you but this is a big upgrade: - BBC SW SPotlight weather - snow and strong winds Saturday night into Sunday and snow lasting until mid afternoon = = blizzards?!

Interesting how the GFS isn't picking up on snowfall accumulations but we are 3 days out is that why? maybe within the next couple runs they should start showing something!?

Saturday's yellow warning area widened, Amber warning coming...

They do, but you need to use the site designed for mobiles/tablets:

A couple of amber warnings for late Saturday / early Sunday now up on the Met Office's website, one for the north Midlands and one for a Thames streamer.

Well I wasn't expecting an Amber warning for anywhere and we're in it!

Just goes to show how far behind the curve the BBC are - this morning Matt was playing down the snow oblivious to the fact that the Met Office were about to issue Ambers.

No longer astounded by this - sometimes Meteogroup will be right and sometimes the Met Office will be but I know wher I will always look for forecasts.

It’s shown me that the upgrade to amber for tomorrow was issued this morning at 10:18. As others have posted, an interesting divergence between the MetO and BBC views of tomorrow.

The Chiltern regions is covered by a yellow not amber warning as far as I can see.

Edit: Although I know the Met seem to have atrocious problems with inconsistent caching across their different channels so one of us could be looking at an older update.

I get that too - also on the mobile site. Would be consistent with a Thames streamer so I think the non-Chilterns version is right.

I just had a look at the BBC teletext pages for Met Office weather warnings

It is currently running to 34 pages of text for Friday to Monday

I have strong doubts whether this amount of regional and daily detail is of much use - and it didn't seem to contain the amber warnings either

There will be a frosty start for some on Wednesday, especially in the east. Otherwise it will be a largely dry day with sunny spells for many before strong winds and a band of rain pushes into the northwest later. This band of cloud and rain will then spread across all parts on Thursday, followed by blustery showers in the west. Low pressure is then likely to be in charge of our weather for the rest of the period bringing spells of rain, especially across the south and southwest. Inbetween spells of rain there will be some drier, brighter and colder interludes. After a cold start to this period, temperatures will tend to recover before it then turns rather cold from the west again later, giving a chance of frost.

There is significant uncertainty in the forecast throughout this period, but a blocked or slowly changing weather pattern is probable. Mixed conditions are likely with wetter than average conditions expected across the south, while staying drier and perhaps colder to the north. Further snow is possible, especially in the north where it will also be windy at times. Temperatures will likely be below average with further night frosts, and any milder interludes will probably be only brief.

When I heard him talking about "snow flurries" I did wonder if he knew what a snow flurry was.

Local BBC radio here in the south " it will be nothing like as severe as the last event "

Just as its a case of choose your model (they are all different re snow) its also a case of choose your bbc forecast.

Radar watch is the only way.

I’m more concerned about the often stark disparity between Meteogroup and UKM forecasts than the graphics. I almost got the feeling Matt Taylor in a forecast earlier today was really struggling with matching what was being depicted on the graphics behind him and what he wanted to say based on his understanding as a meteorologist.

To the majority of Joe Public nothing is really going on but to me I find the current situation with the BBC’s provider often differing from the UKM as all rather sad.

Tell me about it! It's the same for Frost as it is for fog and cloud etc! In fact Philip Avery actually said verbally in his BBC 1 forecast at 1035pm "I'll just take away the cloud cover graphics so you can see the snow!"
