Met office down grading temps yet again - max for Friday is 0c and Sat +3c:

Even the medium term forecast looks cold - albeit not freezing and bitterly cold but certainly not the +8 to +10c that was on offer a day or so back. - Wouldn't surprise me if this cold lasts longer!

It's chaos Marcus. BBC, IMO and as Justin has said, is pretty woeful and fast becoming a joke!

All forecasters were caught unawares with regards to last night's (and ongoing) snow showers (merging to give prolonged activity) from EA through to London and extending W through the M4 corridor and I got a glimpse of a BBC forecast at ca. 10.20pm when watching Outsource which showed very little if any snow in the S for today. Yes, most was to the W of the IOW but even then, it was very patchy and far from notable. Their graphics are awful and hard to see the difference between cloud and snow. All in all, the BBC have made another b*lls up as the METO (though not perfect) is the best of the crop and shouldn't have been ditched. If it's about the money: cut their fat cat pay (instead of hiking the licence) and pay the METO contract. Simples.

We're fortunate in that although local BBC takes the official forecasts, the breakfast presenter takes an interest in weather and modifies these with his own look at the charts.

Separately, it's interesting to see nearly all the UK covered in snow but western Europe nearly snow-free. Doesn't happen often.

A new yellow warning for snow went out last night at just after midnight for the East here over the next couple of days.

Red warning just issued for parts of South Wales, but sadly not Swansea!

Widespread snow is expected to develop through Thursday afternoon and evening. Around 10-20 cm is likely to fall widely, with the potential for up to 30 to 50 cm over parts of Dartmoor, Exmoor and parts of southeast Wales. Snowfall will be accompanied by strong to gale easterly winds, leading to severe drifting of lying snow especially in upland areas. Severe cold and wind chill will compound the dangerous conditions, with very poor visibility. Towards midnight, there is a chance of snow turning to freezing rain in places, mainly across the south of the area, with widespread icy stretches making driving conditions particularly dangerous.

I don't know how accurate MET CHECK is on events like this but there are saying %80 + chance of snow for my postcode today and was not forecast on the weather on TV..... tomorrow still a ? for my postcode..

Two red snow warnings on the same day at opposite ends of the country is quite impressive.

A shame about the amber warning being updated to reduce the likelihood over Central Southern England though - especially as this part is the part of the country which seems to have the least, if any, snow.

I guess the key is not to take the zones too literally. Clouds and PPN do not work that way 

Fantastic news for me of course so this is a surprise by why so locally this red warning ! does this front stall over this part or is it just making up for it's lost time in Exeter: - These area's in read are the exact parts of Devon and Somerset which haven't seen any snow other than flakes or flurries.

I see that our red warning in this part of the world has now been extended out into the early hours of tomorrow morning (it was originally due to expire at 10am this morning).

Not exactly what we want to be seeing at the start of so-called "spring".

You're right, I must have looked at the wrong one although I must say that the weather still doesn't seem to be getting any better with that and according to the forecasts which I have seen, that gradual improvement in the weather which we will ultimately get eventually has now been delayed until tomorrow whereas that was previously going to start from later on today.

Yes heavy snow in Chelmsford for the last few hours The snow that pushed eastwards and then northwards into France yesterday was quite well ahead of storm Emma. That initial band of snow over France has weakened and dispersed. The "all France" radar does not show the Channel snow properly. What happened was that the leading bands of snow from France moved across the Channel in the small hours and engaged with the remains of the streamer. This has introduced some additional moisture and the band has expanded and "may" become self sustaining and bridge the gap to the main event later today or we may get a lull as it pushes northwards. So look at it as an appertizer before things really wind up later on
