Well - I thought the BBC were going a bit off when they forecast +4c as a daytime max for the south west until I saw this forecast by Aidan McGivern: - Shows rain thursday evening for the south coast and many southern areas south of London!? Unless I have missed something!?

Also snow to continue to fall over southern Devon and Cornwall so Exeter will miss out yet again! Sorry but Exeter really is being punished!frown

The talk of freezing rain!? - So much cringe!

Hell of a warning for us in the NE!

www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings#?date=2018-03-01

Frequent and heavy snow showers are expected on Wednesday and Thursday leading to some significant accumulations developing. Long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel could occur. Roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers. Communities might be cut off for several days. Long interruptions to power supplies and other services such as telephone and mobile phone networks, could occur.

Met Office update just puts me on the Southern fringe of the amber warning now instead of being in the midst of it.  Bodes better for my travel plans at least.

Met office

UK Outlook for Saturday 3 Mar 2018 to Monday 12 Mar 2018:

During the weekend, snow across the UK should slowly peter out from the south, but snow showers remaining in the far north. Across central and southern areas, widespread mist and fog may be slow to clear. Some rain or snow may affect the far south at times, but there is currently a lot of uncertainty at this stage. It will stay cold or very cold across the UK, with brisk winds across the north. During the following week, it is likely to stay cold in the north, but temperatures could become closer to normal in the south. It is looking increasingly likely to be unsettled through the week, with areas of rain and strong winds moving north across the country, perhaps turning to snow across central and northern parts.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 13 Mar 2018 to Tuesday 27 Mar 2018:

A blocked pattern remains most likely across much of the UK, with colder than average conditions, but possibly milder at times in the south and southwest. Further bitterly cold easterly winds are probable, giving a significant wind chill. There will continue to be a risk of snow across some central and northern areas, but in the far north and northwest it should be drier. Frosts will continue to be widespread and severe in places. As we head towards the middle of March it may turn more unsettled and less cold with milder and wetter weather spreading up from the south or southwest. This may lead to further significant snow in places although this remains very uncertain. Northern areas may hang on to the colder weather well into March.

A lazy update IMO regarding the 2nd part. Technically, it is at odds from the first part and seems to now be out-dated.

With temperatures likely rising to close to/at normal for the S and spreading N, it isn't really a case of blocking with cold or very cold E'ly winds any longer for the period in question.

At this stage, and it is a big if, but if the GEFS have it right, this cold spell (for the S) would certainly fall short of what COULD have been.

Apparently the Portuguese Met Office have named the Thursday / Friday low pressure as "Storm Emma" and the UK Met Office have adopted it. No idea whether that is true or not.
