It is with much sadness I learned last night of the passing of Philip Eden

Phillip was the owner of the climate-uk website which had highly detailed weather information from Central England Temperature (CET) to rainfall, temperatures and more

A sad loss

RIP

A very sad loss. I knew Philip well for several years at the Telegraph and we regularly had lunch together. A lovely gentle man and a giant in his field.

A very sad loss. I didn't know Philip but believe he had been ill for a number of years. He was a member of the TWO forum and made 52 posts here.

Such sad news to start the day with.

I remember him posting on here, and there being a kind of awe from people. He came across as a thoroughly nice, thoroughly normal, thoroughly knowledgeable chap.

Thoughts with his family.

A very sad loss indeed, to the field of meteorology.

RIP Philip Eden

Used to love his forecasts on LBC in the mornings and wasn't afraid to look ahead. A great loss.

That's where I first heard Philip Eden too. He was totally engaging as a forecaster and didn't stand for any weather hype (which I loved). His newspaper weather sections were always interesting too. And in addition to that he wrote several weather related books.

A huge loss to meteorology.

What awful news.  As others have said, he seemed a thoroughly nice man; knowledgeable and interesting to read or listen to.

IIRC he used to write the monthly summary in the Weather magazine.

Incredibly sad news. Philip was a real gentleman and dedicated, enthusiastic professional. He has been a real loss to the world of meteorology and will be missed. In my limited conversations with him he was always polite, friendly and above all incredibly helpful and informative.

Reflect what others have said. In the brief exchanges we had he was obviously passionate about the weather and a true professional. RIP.

A great shame - he'd forgotten more than I ever knew about the weather and his knowledge of historical events was second to none.

He also founded uk.sci.weather which, before the likes of the BBC discussion board, TWO, NetWeather etc, was where us weather enthusiasts would post online.

Definitely the most informative and professional meteorologist/climatologist and really appreciated his work on Radio 5. I can remember having a "debate" over the general.forecasting accuracy on the Feb 1996 blizzard. Think I was a bit sleep deprived and tetchy after taking about 18 hours to do a 12 mile commute following that!

From Wiki

"Philip Eden was Vice President of the Royal Meteorological Society from 2007 to 2009.
Eden was awarded the Royal Meteorological Society's Gordon Manley Weather Prize in 2000. The prize is awarded annually for any outstanding contribution to Weather through a paper or papers, or other outstanding service to Weather, in the preceding five years that has furthered the public understanding of meteorology and oceanography"

Sad to hear of his passing. First heard of Philip Eden from his excellent "Weatherwise" book published in 1995. His climate.uk website was an excellent site for monthly weather data such as Manley CET, rainfall, sunshine. How many times did we frequently quote from this site? I thought something was amiss and a bit of a concern that his site hadn't updated since November 2013.

RIP Philip.
