Cold and frosty with a slight air frost having been recorded at all three local stations. The minimum temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is -1.2°C with a minimum temperature of -0.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (the temperature is still falling at those two stations as I write) and at Edinburgh Airport, the temperature got down to -2°C.

That in turn though, has brought us into a nice and sunny morning although it isn't expected to remain like that for the rest of the day as the next Atlantic weather system is expected to move in later on. These seasonal conditions which we have just now, are really something to savour just now because if the latest forecasts are correct, it might be a while before we see these conditions again (although they may briefly return next weekend) and because of that, I don't think that tomorrow morning is going to be as cold and frosty.

With that said, the latest official data which I have just now is as follows:

THE BOTANIC GARDENS, EDINBURGH (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: -1.2°C
Dew Point: -1.9°C
Relative Humidity: 96.5%

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.5°C
Anomaly: -0.1 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH GOGARBANK (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: -0.4°C
Dew Point: -2.1°C
Relative Humidity: 91.5%
Wind: N at 1.2mph
Pressure: 1,022.6mb, rising
Visibility: 24.9 miles

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.5°C
Anomaly: +0.1 (set against 1981-2010 average)

EDINBURGH AIRPORT (AS AT 8am)

Temperature: 0°C
Dew Point: -2°C
Relative Humidity: 90.0%
Wind: 3.1mph (no data given for wind direction)
Visibility: At least 6.2 miles

Average Temperature For November 2017: 6.0°C
Anomaly: -0.4 (set against 1981-2010 average for Edinburgh Gogarbank)

Temperatures and dew points at Edinburgh Airport are measured only to the nearest 1°C instead of the nearest 0.1°C.

Since the Met Office doesn't hold any climatological data for Edinburgh Airport, the 1981-2010 averages for Edinburgh Gogarbank are used for that station due to its very close proximity.

A fine start with some sunshine and few high cloud, however a brisk north west wind is making the current 6.3 C & 77% H feel quite cold for it.

Temperatures have now climbed by quite a bit since earlier on this morning, although it has taken much longer to shift all the frost from the roofs than on any other day of the current season so far. It is still and for what is still a fairly early part of the day, a fairly impressive total of 2.3 hours of sunshine had already been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 11am this morning which includes two complete sunny hours from 9am onwards. Having said that though, a veil of high cloud has now started to appear which is the first sign of that weather system moving in later on.

I started off by mentioning the temperatures which as at 11am were 4.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. There is rain forecast to move in by tonight, and this has been forecast to turn to snow over high ground as it hits this cold air which we are still under just now. However, the dew points are now all above freezing here (as at 11am, this was 0.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh). Without going into all of the factors which determine whether or not, it is possible for it to snow, we can probably as a result of what the dew points are like just now say that whilst a few places might get some snow later on, that isn't likely to the case here since once of the requirements for it to snow is that the dew point should be below freezing. This means that if and when that rain comes along later on as forecast, it is just likely to be rain that we get here.

It was a cold, cloudy first half of the day and with a temperature of 8C, clear skies and no wind, will it be fog or car-frost tonight?

After a sunny start to today, it is now a lot cloudier here as had been forecast. In the end, 3.0 hours of sunshine was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank but most of that came this morning (when there was two completely sunny hours between 9am and 11am) with all but 12 minutes of that being recorded before midday.

Today has been cold as well with maximum temperatures so far of 5.2°C at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, and 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and had we not had this latest weather system moving in, that would have been enough for today to end up being the coldest day of both this month and this season so far. Since then, the temperature has dropped a little bit and as at 4pm, it was 4.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, it is forecast to become milder later on tonight, and that is what will probably prevent today from being our coldest day of the month and season so far.

At the moment, there are some little bits and pieces of light rain around according to the various rain radar maps but as yet, I'm not seeing any signs just yet of the more widespread wet weather which has been forecast for the coming week from tonight onwards. That still leaves me feeling this this wetter outlook which is forecast could yet be a bit dubious for a number of reasons. First of all, it has been very dry here this month up until this point which means to suddenly go from that to quite a wet pattern of weather would be quite a massive change. Secondly, we have been led down the garden path on quite a number of occasions recently as a wet pattern which is forecast, is then downgraded over time to the extent that in the end, it never actually happens. Because of that, I will need to see this transition to wetter weather actually happen before I can fully believe that and at the moment, I'm just not seeing that yet.

The process of our weather going downhill which started when that initial veil of high cloud moved in this morning after that sunny, but cold and frosty start to the day has now been completed as it is now raining outside as I write. In the earlier part of this evening, there was very little in the way of rain showing on the various radar maps which made me question whether or not, tonight's forecast for rain would actually be right.

However, the last few hours has seen a line of rain both to the north of here (where it might well be falling as snow over high ground) and to the south-west of here. I studied these maps over those few hours and even as that line of rain edged towards us from the south-west, it had initially looked as though that was breaking up as it was reaching here, such making it appear as though we might see that same old story yet again of very little in the way of rain here if anything at all, which we have seen for quite a long time now, and which has contributed quite a lot towards us having such a dry month so far. As that line of rain has become more extensive though, it has finally managed to reach us in the end.

Of course, that is something which we have seen very little of recently and time will tell us what we get from that in terms of the actual rainfall totals and whether or not, we get any significant amounts of rain from that. The forecasts have said that we are going to be seeing quite a lot of that during the coming week and thus effectively advised us to get used to that. Once again though, only time will tell on that one.

Normally when we have a weather system moving in, we would expect the wind to be picking up a bit as well. However, that hasn't happened so far. If anything in fact, the wind has completely died away so that there is actually very little in the way of wind to speak of just now. Also and despite the forecasts saying that it would get milder, it is still quite cold with temperatures of 3.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 3°C at Edinburgh Airport as at 8pm tonight. At 7pm tonight, it was 3.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That is why I said that it is probably likely to be snowing over the hills and in actual fact, it probably wouldn't need to be all that much colder here than what it is just now, for that rain to be falling as snow here, although we would still need those dew points to be below freezing for that to happen, and that isn't something which we are seeing now.
