Met office update

UK Outlook for Monday 13 Feb 2017 to Wednesday 22 Feb 2017:

Gradually turning less cold through the period, but still with a risk of some sleet or snow showers in Scotland and the north-east, which could be heavy at first. There is likely to be a lot of dry weather around, although it will probably be rather cloudy. The best of any bright spells will be towards the west and northwest, although later in the week and through the rest of the period there is a risk of seeing some wet and windy conditions start to edge into western parts. There is a small possibility this could start as sleet or snow, before turning to rain. It will feel very cold in the easterly wind, but turning less cold with overnight frosts becoming less likely by the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Thursday 23 Feb 2017 to Thursday 9 Mar 2017:

Through the rest of February, the preferred scenario is for conditions to remain largely settled, meaning that our weather will probably stay on the cold side overall. There are likely to be a lot of dry days and some sunny spells but the nights will be cold, probably with frost and fog for some. There is a small risk of a few sleet or snow showers in southern and eastern parts, although confidence is low. Occasional but most likely short-lived spells of milder and wetter weather are possible, and these will most likely be in the west and northwest. The weather at the start of March currently looks rather uncertain, but there is a chance it could turn milder and more unsettled.

Someone's asleep at the wheel!

Slightly OT but those American forecasts are incredible. It staggers me that people talk about the British weather being variable ("four seasons in one day") and all that when compared to a continental climate our weather is mundane in the extreme.

Or, as they have access to much more data, the evolution next week isn't as clear cut as some recent operational runs might suggest.

Certainly the description for early next week looks reasonable: there will still be a fairly cold easterly (or south-easterly) flow over many parts into Tuesday. By then we're at Day 6 and, as we've been seeing, the detail is likely to change.

I think what people are alluding to is that it has barely changed in two days:

UK Outlook for Saturday 11 Feb 2017 to Monday 20 Feb 2017:

A cold east to south-easterly airstream is expected to affect most parts throughout this period. There is likely to be a lot of dry, albeit rather cloudy weather through the weekend, with the best of any brighter breaks expected to develop towards the west and northwest. However, some snow showers are likely to affect the east and northeast, with a small chance of these becoming heavier and spreading to central and some western areas through the weekend. It will feel very cold in sometimes fresh winds with a widespread night frost. Next week there is a chance of some rain or snow affecting the west and northwest at times. Elsewhere it should stay largely dry with snow showers becoming lighter and less frequent. Remaining cold with winds freshening at times.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 21 Feb 2017 to Tuesday 7 Mar 2017:

Through the rest of February, the most likely scenario is for things to remain fairly settled, meaning that our weather is likely to stay on the cold side, with a lot of dry days and some sunny spells. The nights will bring further frost and fog too. Occasional spells of milder, wetter weather are possible, most likely in the west and northwest. The signals for the start of March are currently very weak, but it may turn more widely unsettled and also milder.

Minor changes of detail of course but large chunks are just copy and paste.

London weather: Snow forecast for the capital as temperatures plummet below freezing

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/london-weather-snow-forecast-for-the-capital-as-temperatures-plummet-below-freezing-a3461221.html

An arctic blast will hit the capital as the mercury falls unusually low for early February, the Met Office has warned.Temperatures will plunge below 0C overnight and Wednesday, forecasters said.

Now a plunge to me would be a fall to say lower than minus 6 or minus 7C. Is 0C Unusually low? I think not.

And it gets worse...

Isolated snow showers are expected across the capital on Thursday and Friday.

The city looks set to be blighted with heavier flurries over the weekend.

But look there's more.

Emma Sillitoe, from the Met Office, told the Standard that the cold snap comes as temperatures are expected to drop several degrees lower than average for this time of year.

She said: “The normal temperature for London in early February is around 2C or 3C – on Thursday evening this will drop to freezing, a few degrees lower than is normal for the earlier." sic

The local papers are currently losing their sh1t over a "level three warning" for cold weather. What's that "level three" thing all about? It just makes it sound like Defcon 5 Armageddon stuff.
Yes, it is going to feel cold over the next few days (starting from today) and yes some high elevations here at Kent may get to see a spot of snow on Friday or Saturday before becoming milder again next week. But are we really THAT incapable of applying our own commonsense and some awareness every time there is a chilly spell in winter?
A proper winter is when we have a 1963 or 1947-style season with whole villages being cut off for several days due to drifting snow, when that will happen or is happening then perhaps we'd have more cause for concern.

Yes, this need to issue alerts for the blindingly obvious is a little tedious.

But, only about 2 or 3 'proper winters' per 100 years?   That's setting the benchmark a tad high, don't you think?

Amusing timing after a link containing the following statement:

"Prolonged colder conditions are expected across all regions through the rest of this week and during the weekend, as cold easterly flow establishes. Low daytime temperatures and sharp frosts overnight are the main features, also scattered, mainly light snow showers affecting eastern regions. Added to this will be a slowly strengthening easterly wind, which will add a significant wind chill effect especially along eastern coastal areas."

evening doc, not really the local weather reinforced that view in fact.  Reminds of the early sort of easterly we used to get in November in the south, temps of 4-6 and a lit of sleetiness if you were lucky....I guess by the end of the cold snap on Saturday we will see.

And I'll let you know on Tuesday or whenever it finishes up here. It's certainly not a wintry nirvana but it is nice to see the mention of "moderate falls of snow" in our Met Office forecast. I agree though it's not anything special - but it is chilly.

Our November easterlies bring cool rain - I guess this one could possibly bring cold rain here!

And in the SE... snow mentioned this evening as the upgrades continue.  The dry easterly is dead.

Cold and cloudy with scattered sleet and snow showers.

This Evening and Tonight:

A rather cold and cloudy night with some rain and drizzle clearing westwards out of Hampshire. Scattered rain, sleet and perhaps snow showers affecting the east, spreading westwards along a light easterly wind. Temperatures at or just above freezing. Minimum Temperature 0 °C.

Thursday:

Remaining cold and cloudy, occasionally misty over high ground, with a few light rain or snow showers possible, these especially in the east. Moderate east or northeasterly winds. Maximum Temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Remaining cold and often cloudy with scattered sleet or snow showers at times

The problem is that the media dont have the faintest idea of what that means.  Probably because some of the words are more than 4 letters long.  And they pass on that irresponsible ignorance to the general public

Yep, Louise Lear going against the Meto text and before then the cold spell here will be less cold than our January ice days.

We get North Sea muck instead of Atlantic muck.

Could be sunny and warmer next week though - roll on Spring.

yes cold and damp doesn't do it for me either! Looks like the snow threat gone for most by saturday, followed, by sleet, then rain, then drizzle! Yuk!
