We didn't have central heating until the late 1980s. There were storage heaters on the upstairs and downstairs landings, and one in the kitchen, an electric fire in the dining room, and a coal fire in the living room. There was also a small fan heater, which IIRC was bought around 1983 and was used at times in my bedroom, along with a Dimplex oil filled panel electric radiator, which also moved around and was occasionally used when it got really cold.
The cold spell severity indicators were:
1. How high up the bedroom windows did the ice go?
2. Did the ice on the shaded bedroom windows last all day?
3. Did the ice on the sun-facing windows (my bedroom) last all day? Presumably, this only happened when it was predominantly overcast, but I can't recall with certainty.
To put some context on this, I know that my father's generation had even less heating!
