The tropics are beginning to wake up for the hurricane season. The link reviews the current position.

https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/07/the-eastern-pacific-is-a-tropical-storm-factory-and-the-atlantic-basin-shows-signs-of-life/

At the moment, there seems to be too much wind shear for development in the Atlantic, with tropical depressions simply dumping lots of rain on the SE United States but GFS 0z shows a weak system contributing moisture to the Atlantic circulation which *could* affect British weather at the start of August.

Before it vanishes, develops or whatever, it's interesting that this storm is named after The Weather Outlook.

Tenuous name link but still it's not every day...

Hurricane Genevieve – which was nothing more than a tropical depression on Friday, July 24 – became the first Category 5 storm of 2026 in the Eastern Pacific. Fortunately about 500miles out to sea off Mexico/California and likely to stay clear of land

NHC has finally posted a disturbance on the Atlantic. Although they are downplaying it, this is in the right time frame to recurve up the east coast of the States in, say, 10 days' time as predicted by GFS (see note in today's model output).

Meanwhile the Pacific continues to be very active, though at present with  several small cyclones after Genevieve died away.

2026 so far at the end of august compared to last few years

2022 was a quiet season up until this point but ended up being slightly above average in the end, so still time yet.

Year  TCs/Hurricanes/Major Hurricanes

2026: 3/0/0

2025: 6/1/1

2024: 5/3/1

2023: 13/3/2

2022: 3/0/0

2021: 11/4/2

2020: 14/4/1

https://global-tropical-cyclones.com/basin/natl/

2026 ACE currently sits well outside of the 10th percentile. If the season stays inactive (perhaps super nino makes that more likely) we have a shot at some records. 1914 was the lowest ACE and least active season ever, we can't beat that but its dubious anyway pre satellite record.

With a nice sense of timing, but coincidentally, we have a tropical storm named Dolly.

TS Dolly has now faded away and only has a 10% chance of development over 7 days [NHC}

Is it possible that the Atlantic could go a whole season without any hurricanes forming?

Incidentally it seemed Dolly contributed 0.3 to the total ACE of the season, basically a tiny drop.

2026 really starting to look exceptionally quiet now as we move into the most active month. But September could change everything of course.

Eduardo only adds 0.4 ACE to the season for those interested in breaking a record low ACE record for modern (satellite) history.

We are coming up now on the most active part of the season. It would still be expected that we see a hurricane or major hurricane in the next few weeks.

Again major caveat, the back half of September and October are still major storm producers usually. Even so, its starting to look interesting.

Also a lack of TCs will create a pretty unusual SST profile moving into the winter, usually you want a very active TC season to get a cold winter; but itl still be interesting to see how a potentially record inactive season could play out.
