A noteworthy morning here - despite the modelling, and unexpectedly for me, it went below 10C briefly last night!

A sub 10C minima in August is uncommon here, it last happened in 2021, and given the residual warmth and the 21C sea half a mile away I certainly wasn't expecting to see one this year. It's the first time in two and a half months that we've had one here. The only reason it's happened I think is because there's no wind whatsoever, and the dry ground has radiated heat away effectively. A quarter of a mile away, with a very slight breeze, it's 13C.

Anyway - clear, calm, 10.2 / dew 9.1 The overnight low was 9.7 and yesterday's high was 22.3.

Some areas close to freezing last night (maybe one or two below?) My location was down to 7 C last night.

A mostly sunny start but as is common this August, it will cloud over by lunchtime

As predicted a mostly cloudy day, in fact a mostly cloudy weekend! It's all formed over land, the Forth area and the North Sea have had blue sky all day!!

Despite the lack of sun, we have reached 19 C. The Airport, nearer the Forth has reached 20 C. Winds are light from the north or northwest

This morning was the first morning since 15 June to record a single figure minimum on my PWS. For rural Lancashire, that is a remarkable statistic, showing just how exceptional this summer has been.

Other than that, it's felt warm in the sunshine, with a high of 20.9°C on my PWS.

I spent another couple of days down in Hawick to celebrate my Dad's 90th birthday. I travelled down there on Friday but had to come back to Edinburgh today (Sunday) (I don't normally travel during weekends) as I have to be here on the Monday morning for some workmen coming to my flat.

I am now back in Edinburgh after that very short trip but just prior to me traveling back home, the forecast was for the temperature to only reach 18°C even in the Borders, only for the temperature at Charterhall to also reach 21°C so it seems as though regardless of what the actual forecast temperatures are, we are usually still going to get a 20+°C maximum anyway.

That makes me even more concerned now about the next day or so when we are actually forecast to get a 20+°C because I wouldn't be surprised if those next couple of days actually ended up being hotter than those forecasts with the temperatures possibly going into heatwave territory once again on one or both of those days.

Furthermore, there was clearly no lack of sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank where a total of 7.6 hours of sunshine was recorded in the end.

Even with that, this month might still not necessarily end up being sunnier than average but a total of only at least 15.9 hours of sunshine need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this summer to go down as being sunnier than average and with another 8 days still to go, that is probably going to end up happening now with that requirement possibly even being met within the next couple of days.

A fair bit of cloud this morning, and the warmth is back as winds swing round from the NE.

17.2, dew 12.9, the overnight low being 16.6. Yesterday's high was 23.7, so a whisker above average.

Mid-single figures again last night 6.5 C here under the hill. 8 C at Swanston. We have a heavy dew and it feels autumnal out there

Today looks like being mostly sunny and warm and possibly 20 C+ before an easterly sets in for the next few days

If this week ends up being sunnier than expected as well, this will mean that we still can't completely write off our chances of this month also being sunnier than average although we will need a really sunny week for that to happen and as the days continue to shorten, that is only going to become more difficult to achieve over time.

Rather than us possibly getting a 20+°C maximum today, I would say that we probably will get a 20+°C maximum today. That is actually forecast to happen today and given that days tend to be warmer than they are actually forecast to be, that to me make a 20+°C maximum a dead cert today.

Last night was rather chilly though as the overnight minimum temperatures were 5.65°C at Gogarbank and 7.18°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes last night our second coldest night of this summer so far and had that temperature been just a couple of degrees colder than what they actually were, we might well have even been looking at the possibility of a ground frost which is something which we would typically not expecting to be seeing just now given that it is technically, still summer.

Currently around 10°C here in Edinburgh.

A North Sea spoiler is setting up John. It has limited the temperature to 18 or 19 so far (13:50) with 20 at Swanston, more inland

I think we will have a North Sea Spoiler for the rest of the week

That temperature has now dropped to just below 20°C but it was above 20°C there for a short period of time at around lunchtime which means that the maximum temperature will also be above 20°C just as I predicted and despite that North Sea effect.

EDIT:

Even at the botanic gardens which is closer to the coast than any of the other major stations here in Edinburgh, the temperature has now reached 21°C fairly late in the day and in the end, that North Sea "spoiler" has ended up spoiling absolutely nothing, and has not even managed to limit those temperatures in any way (at least as far as today is concerned which is all that this particular thread is concerned about).

Today's maximum temperature was 21.95°C at Gogarbank and 21.36°C at the botanic gardens despite an ongoing North Sea effect.

In addition to that, a total of 9.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Gogarbank which makes today our sunniest day of this month so far.

This means that only at least another 6.4 hours of sunshine now need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this summer to go down as being sunnier than average.

The previously unsettled look to this week's forecast has been largely downgraded over time with most of the more interesting weather now looking likely to be further south. As a result, that target for this summer to be sunnier than average will probably be achieved tomorrow and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised now, if this month also ended up being sunnier than average.

Despite the ongoing North Sea effect in the coming days, the lowest maximum temperature within the foreseeable future according to the Met Office is 19°C and we all know now, that those days usually always result in us still getting a 20+°C maximum anyway. Because of that, I'm struggling to see when the next day is actually going to come when we don't get a 20+°C maximum here in Edinburgh and even though the winds are going to be coming in from off the North Sea for the foreseeable future, I can't see that making the least bit of difference to that on this occasion.

As I write, it is warmer than at this time last night with a current temperature of around 16°C and a more humid feel.

It's not very often these days that it ends up being not quite as warm here as it was forecast to be, but today was such a day as today was slightly cooler than yesterday with a maximum temperature of 18.29°C at Gogarbank and 18.85°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. The temperature even as early as around 10am BST this morning was already around 18°C but then it barely budged one little bit after that.

In addition to that, a total of only 1.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today in the end at Gogarbank which still leaves us needing a total of at least 5.0 hours of sunshine between now and the end of this month in order for this summer to go down as being sunnier than average, and there are now only 6 days left of this month for that to happen.

Currently around 16°C here in Edinburgh.
