I see that the June UK maximum temperature record of 37.7C at Lingwood Norfolk recorded on 26th June has been re-evaluated as 38.0C following a more detailed study by the Met Office

Weather-related news story of possible interest. It has been a bit quiet here - we often seem them going over. Waddington is line of sight.

The RAF's aerobatics team were due to return to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire last week following its tour of the US, but were grounded due to poor weather predicted for north-eastern regions of Canada.

In an update, the team said it now anticipated continuing its multi-leg journey back to the UK next week.

"Regrettably, this revised timeline means the Red Arrows will not be in a position to complete performances at Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week," a spokesperson said.

As it been a historic summer and more hotter than before with many records broken this year.  One thing to notice that in the past hot summers we had no heat hater clubs, heat hater protesters and dismissing models that showing high temps like GFS which was performing very well on this heatwave.   I went to NW  this morning and i see the stupid heat hater as the main top topic but no top topic about today possible August record to be broken.  I am so glad Brian won't allow this to happen as to be fair if there a heat hater club they should put other clubs like cold unsettled haters, they did once but took down from what I learnt.  I never joined there yet due to ever increasing heat and summer haters around.   Last good summer was 2018 and there was no heat hater clubs, also back in other hot summers.  The heat hater was formed last year even it was not a hot summer just bog standard warm summer.

Darren does not like the heat but he very smart and got the AC long time ago and able to live and sleep comfortable as I don't see him bother about this year hot weather due to having AC in his home.  So why doesn't the heat haters or summer hater follow Darren example get their AC units in their home?  I don't see any of them have one.  Brian have one in his bedroom i remember he mentioned it.

Today will be very interesting day and last time to see those such high 30s temperatures for 2026.

In past years, there has been occasions in which there has been a lot of snow around to the extent that even those snow lovers who crave that all the time have then got fed up with that. In my view, this period which we are experiencing just now is just an extension of that but in terms of the heat and dry conditions, rather than snow. I personally, have got fed up with it being hot and dry for so much of the time, and would just like to see something cooler and wetter for a change. For that reason, I can perfectly understand why NW has its heat haters thread. I am also fed up with high temperature records being broken all the time (why can't we see some low temperature records for a change which would at least compensate for that), so I can understand why NW wouldn't see high temperature records as such a massive headline as a result (if they happen only rarely, that is big news but if they happen all the time, they are hardly big news any more as they have now just become part and parcel of what typically happens all the time).

For me, those are the actual reasons why I joined NW myself although I still don't post on there as often as I post on here. As consumers, we are perfectly free to either buy a product or not buy that produce regardless of how aggressively that product is advertised. In the same way, we are all free to either be a part of this forum or not be part of it as we so wish. The same is also true for other forums such as NW. This means that if we don't agree with how Brian runs this forum (thankfully, I don't fall into that camp myself) but see something on another forum which we would like to be part of but which Brian typically wouldn't allow on here, we are then perfectly free to jump ship and join that other forum instead.

That works the other way round as well of course because if we are a member of the NW forum already but don't agree with how that forum is run, we are then equally free to jump ship and join this forum if we see something on here which Brian encourages or allows us to discuss, but which are discouraged or not allowed on the NW forum. I would imagine as well, that there are plenty of members of this forum who fall into that camp, although there are probably also some members of the NW forum who fall into the category which I described in the last paragraph above.

It's all just a matter of personal opinions at the end of the day, and the fact that some people will always have completely different opinions from others.

The last day here < 21°C was June 12th. That's more than 2 months above that threshold. Since June 20th only 6 days have failed to max at or above 24°C. Both of these are unprecedented records (been recording and logging since 1983).

I think this thread is the right place for this:

Someone has posted a chart of 25C+ days in London since the late 1950s. It encapsulates Southern English summer climate history better than anything else I’ve seen.

https://x.com/thesnowdreamer/status/2089755332427862024?s=46

(Can’t post the pic so you’ll need to click the link).

25C is the common European definition of “summer day”. I agree, although in the right conditions 23 or 24C can be pleasant. It’s the old BBC red symbol threshold.

1. In the 1960s London was averaging only 11 of them a year. That’s scarcely imaginable. The 1990-2020 average is 30 days. This year we’ve already hit over 70.

2. It shows how climate change has progressed: the really warm outlier summers come rarely, and the trend is spiky although the peaks are getting higher. But at the other end of the spectrum the worst years are getting steadily and monotonically better. Virtually a straight line. A 1960s style summer now would be a huge statistical freak (and incidentally this also shows just what a statistical freak 1976 was, and 2007 too).

3. You can really pick out the “good” years. 1959, 1975 and 76, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995 etc etc.

4. But you can also see exactly where our “average” year now is: a summer as warm as 1949, 1990 or 1997 is now normal. A summer like 1994, 1999, 2005 or 2013 would now be below trend. Those are summers I remember fondly for warmth. We’re almost at the level of 1983 being average. Give it a decade.

I'm not too bothered about the cooler and wetter weather at the moment. Some rain is needed now, after all. The past 48 hours have brought about 30mm, mostly in the overnight hours here. It's given the garden a good watering and started to refill the water butts, so there's no complaints for now.

A bit of thunder and lightning wouldn't go amiss though.

As things slowly start to take on a little bit of an Autumnal tinge, I will miss Summer '26 as I've grown fond of it.

After my mum passed away in March aged 84 following a long battle with Alzheimer's, I tried to make this Summer as my own with regular bike rides and sitting outside on garden chair almost daily. The green on my beloved lawn will return, but I don't miss my old tomato greenhouse workplace.

I don't know if I am the only one on this forum, but a few hours after the first rain since June 20th, I began sneezing and got a blocked nose. I think it's because of a buildup of mould allergens being given free reign to break free and multiply. I used to experience this after the long dry season overseas when the first rains fell.

It'll still be chilly at 19c, but at least dry

Here's hoping for a nice September (mists & mellow fruitfulness), a cold and dry end of October/early November, stormy mid-November, and an early onset of winter as we move into December (a la 2010). We can but dream!!
