Today is the seventh - and last - spell of the heatwave here, at least going by the MetO definition (27C). A remarkable run, as normally you get a sea breeze kicking in to break things up. Not this time!

The maxima have been (rounded) 28, 30, 28, 27(.4), 30, 35, 28. By far the warmest spell of the summer overall, even if it didn't beat the 35.8 of last month.

Next highest seems to be Writtle on 29.2, so Charlwood does look a bit fishy. Gatwick a mile or so away only hit 28.

Meanwhile 12Z GFS gives us another two 35C days on August 12 and 13th! Could we possibly get 35C in four separate months?

Rain here this evening, briefly heavy, and the temperature has crashed from today's high of 27C to 17C.

I've just driven from near Ely back to Cambridge and the mist rising off the hot road surface was impressive.

And we have puddles! I haven't seen those in a very long while.

It is a unique smell, dont think its possible to replicate it artificially.  Leaded petrol was another of my favourites as a kid.

Anyway I digress. I’ll be watching for today’s max which could be the lowest of the whole month, 26.6C the current low. Annoyingly just preventing us from having an entire month reaching 80F every day.

25.5C at Thorney Island so far. Which I am fairly sure makes this the first month ever to reach 25C somewhere in the UK every single day. Even July 2006 failed on two days, with a lowest max of 23.9C. 25.5C at Thorney Island so far. Which I am fairly sure makes this the first month ever to reach 25C somewhere in the UK every single day. Even July 2006 failed on two days, with a lowest max of 23.9C. August 1995 also came close, with two days below 25C and a lowest max of 23.8C, as did July 2018 (2 days <25C, lowest 24.4C, which seems to be the closest).

Yep. I trawled through the stats and the longest 25C+ spell I could find was 40 days in 1995. We are currently on 32 days but I don't think we will beat it, as it looks like there is a cooler interlude coming at the end of next week. Although it has looked that way several times this summer!

Local PWS has reached 26.6C which seems high compared to official ones. Netweather list says a max of Thorney Island of 26.5C at 1359Z, but just 25.8 one minute later...

Some really dry air around today following that cold front... Yeovilton at 22.8/dew 0.3 (22.5% RH) stands out, but Merryfield at 23.0/0.5 (22%) pips it.
