That of course, is having quite a big impact on our temperatures which are continuing to be stuck at a very disappointing (for this time of the year) 16°C here in Edinburgh. For places close to the North Sea and which are more exposed to the wind coming from that direction, I would probably expect that, so the one thing which is surprising me is the fact that even locations such as Glasgow Airport over in the west of Scotland are actually not any warmer than that just now even though I would have expected those locations to be much more sheltered from any winds from off North Sea and much sunnier as a result.

I am wondering though whether or not, there much be a weak weather front trapped underneath the high pressure which might not necessarily be bringing any rain, but which might result in there being more cloud around more generally because in that scenario, there isn't anything which even any really strong sunshine can do about that. None of the latest radar maps are showing anything in that regard, but the Met Office maps are showing some drizzly stuff just off the east coast which is also fringing into the East Neuk of Fife.

I had a night away in the Surrey Hills near Dorking earlier this month and saw the Goodyear blimp flying over there too. It seems to be on tour at the moment!

Breezy but not as much as yesterday 

If there is anything at all which is going to be different from one day to the next from now on, it is the fact that the Sun will take longer to break through on some days, but will probably break through very quickly or even be out from the very start on other days. For that reason, what has happened today has done nothing to change my prediction for this month to be sunnier than average in the end.

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature remains generally stuck at around 17°C and just 16°C near the coast. However, I believe that Glasgow can safely be removed from Jerry's coldest places in Europe list as the temperature at Glasgow Airport has now gone up to around 20°C (Glasgow will probably get a 20+°C maximum today whereas that remains unlikely to happen here in Edinburgh due to there still being too much wind coming in from off the North Sea).

It's just a shame that can't happen in the winter rather than right now in what is supposed to be high "summer".

However, a total of 5.7 hours of sunshine had been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8:40pm BST (19:40 UTC) this evening. Today was nowhere near as a sunny as it has been lately due to the fact that it took a lot longer this time for the Sun to eventually break through, but this month's sunshine total so far continues to remain ahead of what we would typically expect at this stage of this month and because of that, this month is still continuing to remain on course to be sunnier than average in the end.

Different world ...

Yes it's very different weather to England for sure! Here in the capital, in the North Sea cloud, the temperature fell to 11 C. At 7.30 am it's up to 12 C

Here in Edinburgh, we often struggle to get a frost even in the depths of winter and yet we're now seeing these reports of a few places up north getting an air frost in what is supposed to be high "summer" and the warmest month of the year on average. You really couldn't make that up but this shows how crazy and mixed up, our weather can be at times.

Today is St. Swithin's Day and of course, it's not going to be raining here as it hardly ever does any more.

Today has got off to another dull and overcast start here in Edinburgh but as is always the case with this type of synoptic setup, we (at least I) already know that the question being asked for today is when the Sun will eventually break through, rather than whether that will happen or not.

Last night's overnight temperature was 12.61°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 12.84°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so last night was actually slightly warmer than the previous night here.

The difference between Scotland and the South of the UK is astonishing winter or summer. Down here on the south coast we didn't drop below 18.5C, which isn't actually that far above the average overnight low for the time of year. The average is around 15C but between mid July &mid August it's more like 16C.

Another reason why for some time now, I have never believed that this month was going to be anything other than sunnier than average in the end.

Having said that though, it still doesn’t feel all that warm in that wind here in NW Edinburgh where there are still a few bits and pieces of easterly muck being blown in from off the North Sea at times.

Looking at the satellite images the cloud is burning off faster than yesterday.

Gogarbank could see a 20+°C maximum today but I reckon that it is very much touch and go as to whether that happens or not and that could easily go either way. There is clearly no chance of any such temperature being recorded at the botanic gardens though.

It's ended up not even being as touch and go as I thought. Edinburgh gogarbank now already has its 20+°C maximum with a current temperature of 20.04°C and with that, I might as well just give up on reporting these things as this has all just become really boring now!!

If I go south 700 miles I am just off the coast of Algeria

It is quite a latitude difference and the climate in the far North of Scotland is very different.

I can land at Inverness Airport sometimes in the Summer and the temp is around 21 c

Travel up to the Kyle of Sutherland and the temp will drop 5or 6 degrees.Days over 25 are fairly rare and very rarely consecutive.
