Having said that, there is still plenty of high cloud around which is continuing to make the sunshine rather hazy at times, but there are also some decent sunny spells coming through.

There is still a breeze coming in from off the North Sea although that doesn't appear to be as noticeable as it was when I first ventured out this morning.

Currently around 19°C here in Edinburgh more generally (Gogarbank and Swanston will no doubt see another 20+°C maximum as a result) but still only around 16°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where there's still unlikely to be any 20+C maximum for now at least.

Here in NW Edinburgh, it has felt quite chilly at times in recent days with that wind coming in from off the North Sea even whilst those 20+°C maximums were being recorded at Gogarbank, so a lot of people in this part of Edinburgh will no doubt be glad to see the back of that which would then allow 20+°C maximums to be recorded across all of my local stations here in Edinburgh instead of that just being confined to Gogarbank and Swanston.

Even at the botanic gardens though, the temperature is now up to around 18°C which is actually warmer than it has been in recent days. This means that we might not actually be all that far away from getting 20+°C maximums right across the board although we will probably need to get rid of that breeze from off the North Sea altogether in order for that to happen.

National 7 day running average for Ireland (Rep) up to yesterday standing at 19.3c, which as far as I can tell is the highest 7 day running average on record, and is now above that of the 19.2c logged back in July 2021. 

Today was actually very slightly cooler than yesterday in more inland areas, but warmer than yesterday closer to the coast despite that continued breeze from off the North Sea still being in evidence..

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 21.95°C which is slightly down on yesterday but there another local station here in Edinburgh which joined the 20+°C maximum party as the temperature at Edinburgh Airport also reached 20°C today.

That now leaves the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as the only local station where the temperature in recent days has failed to reach 20°C but even there, today's maximum temperature was 19.14°C which is actually a bit warmer than of late.

Currently around 17°C here in Edinburgh right across the board so as I write, the distance from the coast is no longer playing any part in the current temperature even though that breeze from off the North Sea has still never completely gone away.

This evening is also much sunnier than it was at this time year with none of the high cloud around which we had then.

The overnight low was 16.2, which is 3 degrees above average. It's the coldest it's been in a fortnight! (And no, it doesn't feel even remotely chilly, in case anyone's wondering, it's still 24C upstairs and 23C downstairs).

Yesterday's high was 26.3, an unwelcome ninja upgrade on a week which was, until Thursday afternoon, not expected to exceed 23 here (going by the MetO raw).

It is a mostly sunny start though, we've lost the relentless NE wind and now have a gentle northerly

There was some cloud which came in for a short while to spoil our sunshine but that wasn't around for long, and we're now back to the usual sunny skies once again.

As far as the winds are concerned, the latest data appears to have shown that we have lost that wind from off the North Sea, but there's no westerly component to that wind direction either as of yet.

As long as the winds remain light more generally, there is always the chance that a local sea breeze from off the North could develop over the course of the day which could still keep it that bit cooler closer to the coast.

As I write, there isn't the big temperature difference across the north and south of Edinburgh which we have seen in recent days, but there is still a slight temperature difference there as the temperature is more generally around 17° here in Edinburgh as I write, but only around 16°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

With that, the temperature at Gogarbank has actually dropped back slightly to around 17°C as I write which has now completely wiped out the temperature contrast across the city for the time being at least although rather interestingly, the temperature at Edinburgh Airport is still around 18°C as I write but I reckon that Jerry will be disappointed in the fact that the latest temperature which I can see for Swanston is only 16.4°C under cloudy skies.

Sunny with fewer clouds compared to yesterday.

Even at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, the temperature is currently at 18.5°C with the possibility that we could finally get to see the first 20+°C maximum being recorded there since 10 July 2026.

That is now over a week ago and given that we are in high summer, the fact that we have gone for so long without a 20+°C maximum there is very poor indeed.

In complete contrast to that though, the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has only failed to reach 20°C on three occasions during that same period with 20+°C maximums being recorded there on the last three days in a row (today will therefore be the fourth day of that run when that is officially confirmed as it no doubt will be).

From that, it should be easy to see why a lot of people in the north of Edinburgh in particular will be glad to see the back of those North Sea winds and because of that, I believe that anyone in the south of Edinburgh who comes on to gloat about it being warmer there should at least spare a thought from those of us in the north of the city who have had to endure that. 

This is also the first time since then that 20+°C maximums have been recorded at all of my local stations here in Edinburgh as the current temperature at the other stations as I write are 21.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21°C at Edinburgh Airport and 21.0°C at Swanston (although the temperature at Swanston has dropped back to 19.6°C as I write).

The main thing though is the fact that we have finally managed to break that duck at the botanic gardens and get a little bit of warmth into the north of Edinburgh as well as the south of the city.

Note also the lack of rainfall. 0.2mm on June 26 was the last measurable ppn. Less than 1mm of rain since June 12.
