Feels much hotter than the last couple of days with a clear sky and hardly any wind. Local PWS says 33.5C (and feels like 34.3C) - a jump of 1C since 2pm.

The temperature at the botanic gardens is only 1.60°C short of that highest temperature of the year so far which also gave us our hottest June day on recorded and the actual maximum temperature is usually higher than the highest hourly reading.

However, that is a big enough difference to mean that we are unlikely to actually get our hottest day of the this year so far with today's figures although that can never be completely ruled out. In any case, no records are under threat this time time though, as we would need a 30+°C maximum here in order to even challenge any records for this month but today's date record at the botanic gardens is exactly 28.00°C and there is an outside chance that we could challenge that today, if not beat that.

Despite those high temperatures though, I'm not actually sweltering in my flat to the extent that I was the last time we saw these high temperatures in June. The Met Office have been saying for some time that it wouldn't be as humid this time as it was with that June hot spell and that does appear to be the case at the moment.

Still rising here, 34.4 on the local PWS. Heathrow has hit 33.6, could be close to a date record (34.1 to beat)

Still rising here, too, a late 30.2 means the third day in a row that's hit 30 here. That's very unusual considering it's a coastal location. Tomorrow should make it four, and as a comparison in 1976 only four days across the whole summer reached 30 on Sheppey!

My PWS is rising but I am pretty sure that is because by this time of night the sun is too far round past due West to be hitting the Daytime FARS solar panel, but who knows. We lost most of a big apple tree, which would have been shading it now, last winter.

It is now showing 33.7c so only 0.1c than the hottest during the expected height of the heat but that was back around 4pm.

Today's maximum temperature was 26.93°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 27.25°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh to give us not only first 20+°C maximum of this month at all three of our local stations, but also our first 25+°C maximum of this month and our first 80+°F maximum of this month. This wasn't enough to give us our hottest day of the year so far or to challenge any date records for here, but this was enough for today to go down as our second hottest day of this year as a result.

In addition to that, a total of 9.7 hours of sunshine was recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8:40pm BST (19:40 UTC) this evening which makes today our sunniest day of this month so far to such an extent that this isn't all that far away from having doubled our sunshine total for this entire month in just a single day even though today was still not actually as sunny as it can be at this time of the year. That in turn just goes to show how ridiculously dull for this time of the year that the first week of this month actually was.

As I write, the temperature here in Edinburgh is still a very warm 22°C.

Here in Edinburgh, today has actually started off on a bright and sunny note just for a change, which is something which we haven't seen for quite a while in these parts.

With that, we would be able to once again achieve our highest daily sunshine total of this month so far although with the days now getting shorter, it is now getting more difficult to get our highest daily sunshine total of the year.

It will therefore be interesting to see how hot today ends up becoming as a result. The Met Office have actually upgraded today's forecast maximum to around 26°C, but they have also downgraded tomorrow's forecast to just 24°C when we are expecting to see more of a North Sea influence come into play and of that comes off, there will once again be no official heatwave here in Edinburgh.

As I write, the temperature here in Edinburgh is generally a relatively cool 12°C but due to the urban island heat effect, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are a bit warmer at around 15°C as the botanic gardens are fairly close to the city centre whereas the other stations such as Gogarbank are located more on the outskirts of the city.

Lovely morning for a run with the sun coming up over the hill at 5:15, the farmers were already out on the combines working hard as usual.

Just as we were hoping for a completely sunny day here in Edinburgh, some rather annoying cloud cover has just moved in to spoil that sunshine at times.

That cloud cover isn't amounting to much and the skies are still largely clear but this does mean that even on a day like today when we're expected to see a peak in our temperatures, we still cannot get a completely sunny day from sunrise to sunset such as what we saw quite of lot of last year and also during the spring of this year. That of course, is also another big part of the reason why we can't seem to get a sunnier than average month at the moment.

Nevertheless, the temperature here in Edinburgh is now around 16°C as I write.

Hopefully we'll reach above 25 C again today

10.30am and it has just ticked over 30C on the local PWS. Looking at the Weatherobs map I'm pretty much in the hottest part of the country at the moment - SW of London.

High res models reckon 34C max here but it feels like it could beat that.
