Michaela on Springwatch mentioned today's record but then followed it up with "it's been a very hot Spring" !

First of all, it has already been reported on this thread that the UK as a whole came fairly close to getting its first official tropical night in May (that record figure of 19.4°C was only 0.6°C short of that) and given the current overall warming trend, it will be interesting to see how much longer it will now take for that to actually end up happening in possibly the near future.

Here in Edinburgh, tonight's overnight minimum temperature is being forecast by the Met Office to drop to no lower than around 14°C but the highest ever minimum temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in May according to records going all the way back to 1959 is currently 14.1°C. This means that if tonight ends up being any warmer than what is actually being forecast, there is a good chance that tonight could end up being our warmest May night on record.

That would come in addition to the two date records which were beaten both yesterday and today for our daytime maximum temperatures. In the end, today's maximum temperature at the botanic gardens reached 25.83°C. At Gogarbank, the maximum temperature was 25.03°C and only a day or so after getting its first 20+°C maximum of the year, that same station has now just recorded its first 25+°C maximum of the year.

I'm still sat outside watching the swifts zooming around and making a lot of noise!

SSTs in The Channel are currently 2-3c above normal.  

In Biscay and the northern Med they’re higher than that; there’s a patch off the coast of western France that’s around 5c above.  

Don’t forget that heatwave in April, brief though it was.

Tomorrow outside should be 33-34 and conservatory 44-45C which this time the heatwave is perfect timing to get records broken of 34.8C as the daylight and sun position are like mid July levels.

Kita the weather guy from Cyprus mentioned about London get to 34.8C that no where in Cyprus had reached this month only 33.8C in Atheinou area and Nicosia 33.2c.  They having a cooler and wetter Spring compare to here and normally 38C or so are frequently reached in Nicosia for May.  First time to happen that we are hotter than Cyprus maximums.  

Yes true, and I had. Nevertheless not sure this Spring was particularly above average anywhere.

According to the MetOffice the CET was over 2c above average in March and April and again running comfortably ahead in May.

I wonder if we’ve just adjusted to our changing climate and forgotten that cold spells are less frequent, shorter and less cold now?

Oddly enough it didn't seem particularly hard to sleep, and sure enough it's "only" 13.9 outside right now! Quite a fail for their modelling, and I note yesterday's high was 26.4 rather than the 32 their raw output had. (This follows on from Sunday, which ended up as 21.8 rather than the 25/6/7 that the raw showed at various times during Sunday itself). It now has 32 for today (down from a predicted 34 the past couple of days) and that's still with an onshore breeze from a 14C sea - I would expect maybe 28 or 29 at a push, but we'll see. Friday is now showing 31, and as that's with SW'lies - always a warm direction due to the foehn effect from the Downs - I can imagine that will actually happen!

Incidentally looking at xc there are a number of places still in the 20s, notably 23s at Waddington and Barkston Heath "up north". Astonishing for May, frankly...
