Another 30mm widely across the south coast yesterday, lots of roads in Sussex closed.

Would have been the blizzard of the century if the temp had been, say, 3C cooler

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 1.6 mm

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 3.2 mm (as at 6:40 am GMT (06:40 UTC) this morning on Sunday 22 February 2026)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 56.4 mm (92.4% of 1991-2020 February average)

Number of rain days during this month: 12 (112.1% of 1991-2020 February average)

Number of dry days during this month: 3

This means that at least another 4.8 mm of rain still needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

However, more official rain days have now been recorded during this month than the 1991-2020 February average and so regardless of what happens during the rest of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 176.2 mm (84.3% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of rain days during this winter: 38 (102.5% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of dry days during this winter: 21

This means that more official rain days have now been recorded during this winter than the 1991-2020 winter average and so regardless of what happens during the rest of this month, this winter will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 102.6 mm (13.1% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 27 (19.6% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 10

For crap data try

https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels

Enter your county, and if Kent or Sussex is anything to go by, you will be amazed at how your chosen county has expanded to take in other areas (the only groundwater reading for Sussex is actually in Hampshire).

Then turn your attention to 'height'. In most cases this is typically 0.5 - 1m , could be quite reasonably either the depth of water in the river (height = depth? never mind) or height above some normal value (but it doesn't say). Keep an eye open for rogue values though; for Sussex the Petersfield stream (again in Hampshire ) has a height of 60m. Wow! that's some flooding! In fact it's almost certainly a height above sea level which is not useful as a guide to local flooding, supposedly what the site is intended for.

If you start clicking through you do get an explanation but there's no indication at the top level that this is available

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 3.0 mm

Monthly Data

Final total for February 2026 so far: 66.0 mm (108.1% of 1991-2020 February average)

Number of rain days during February 2026: 16 (149.5% of 1991-2020 February average)

Number of dry days during February 2026: 5

February 2026 was a wetter than average month in terms of the number of rain days but in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, it was only slightly wetter than average. That is mainly due to February being the winter's driest month on average according to the 1991-2020 monthly averages which makes the 1991-2020 February average lower than the monthly averages for the other winter months and if you compare February's total with any of the other monthly averages for any other winter month, it actually comes out as being drier than average. Furthermore, February was also the winter's only wetter than average month in the end.

Seasonal Data

Final total for the winter of 2025/26: 185.8 mm (88.9% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of rain days during the winter of 2025/26: 42 (113.3% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of dry days during the winter of 2025/26: 23

In common with most of the rest of the UK, the winter of 2025/26 was wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days but in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, it was actually drier than average overall with February being its only wetter than average month.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 112.2 mm (14.3% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 31 (22.6% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 13

Final total for February here is 104mm  (267% average).    The wettest February I've ever recorded, in records going back to 1983.  Previous wettest February here was in 2024 with 97mm.    Remarkably,  the top five wettest Februaries I've recorded have all been in the last 6 years - 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2026.

In terms of Winter 2025/26 rainfall, the grand total here was 267mm.   Makes it the wettest Winter I've recorded since 1983.  Top three wettest Winters I've recorded have also all been since 2020.   Flooding is now starting to become an annual occurrence in Winter locally around here, whereas it was pretty rare a decade or so ago.
