Some serious snow in Kamchatka... over 10ft, some media say it's the highest totals in almost 150 years. https://www.reddit.com/r/geography/comments/1qcuyw9/enormous_snowfall_in_russias_kamchatka/

I've put this in the "unusual" thread, but in reality it seems to be the new normal - we've lost our snow down here generally, but America sure hasn't! From an article on the Telegraph about a 100-vehicle pileup in Michigan in a snowstorm, we have this snippet:

"Temperatures have plummeted across vast parts of the country. Unusually, snow fell as far south as the Florida Panhandle in the early hours of Sunday, with some residents reportedly staying up to get a rare glimpse of the flurries."

I know the feeling of waking up early to try and see a snow flurry...

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2026/01/19/snowstorm-creates-100-vehicle-pile-up-michigan-lorries/

And it's worth mentioning that the Florida panhandle is as far south as the Western Sahara, and even south of Cairo!

Can't find the 'North American' thread but a serious snow/ice storm is being predicted for much of the southern/central and eventually the eastern belt of the States over the weekend. Gulf of Mexico air colliding with unusually cold Arctic air. Not going to be fun.

Edit: Prep forecast for Sunday 18z. Synoptic scale event!

My wife's home state of Victoria, Aus recorded its highest ever temperature yesterday, 48.9c, at Walpeup and Hopetoun. Obviously the fires are a big issue again in what is the hottest summer in general for 20 years.

I was looking at the data on the BOM this morning at about 4am/3pm local for Mildura which was almost real-time when it got to 48.5c - almost as crazy as the temp was the DP and RH values, which aligned to other local stations, so not a reporting error.

The RH was 5% with a DP of -1.0c

Who would ever have thought NYC/ DC/ Phili / Baltimore etc would be locked into the freezer for weeks whilst Greenland basking in winter warmth given their 64'N latitude!? Anyone?

Back home it doesn't look good for any cold esp for the south - cold rain maybe but that's it - especially given the fact it is staying cold in N.America so this cyclogenisis continues so it seems then!?

Sarah Keith-Lucas and the BBC presenters discussing the possibility of snow showers in Barbados😮 But doesn't match the current standard weather forecast for the area, so don't get too excited.

Quite. My brother arrived in Speightstown the other day. North easterlies all the way across the Atlantic and a rough crossing. Lovely where he is on the lee side of the island of a rough ocean. A turtle swam by the boat just after he arrived.

Unusually, Jan was Snowless in Reykjavik. Even my pathetic 1cm beats that northern location.

Although to be fair, their record snowfall in October last year probably made up for it.

It is amazing that even during a clear warming, you can still get localised record cold.
