The local one here is that when snow hangs around, it's waiting for more. (That's paraphrased from my late gran, who also said "rain before 7, fine by 11" and "three frosts and it wets itself". There's a lot to be said for that sort of weather lore - her mum's side was a farming family).
The sleety stuff we had this morning left behind a few patches of white blobby bits on the lawn, FWIW, which I think was either snow or graupel - it lingered all day in a couple of spots, and even now the ground is still frozen under a mm or two of mud - it's like going to an area with permafrost in summer! There were also rain puddles on the lawn first thing, which then froze - seems the frozen ground stopped the rain soaking in, so it pooled, then the cold ground froze the lot.
The fun thing is it's been above freezing since 11AM yesterday. Just goes to show what a few very frosty nights and low dewpoints can do!
