Even for a region that is prone to earthquakes, there really have been some large ones in the NW Pacific this year.

In the early 70s, when we lived in Manchester, there was an earthquake generated by the Pendle Fault, Richter Scale 3 IIRC. It felt like a heavy lorry passing outside, but without the noise.
I was in San Francisco in 1989 a couple of days after their big quake in October of that year and there was an aftershock exactly as you described for Manchester. Very low frequency noiseless vibration and I noticed the liquid level in a bottle of CocaCola moving around. We had the Local TV news on at the time and the presenters dived under the desk
