"Improved models of yesterday's CME suggest that it might hit Earth, after all. A glancing blow (or near miss) is possible on Dec. 7th, potentially sparking a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm. The CME was launched on Dec. 4th by an M6-class solar flare from sunspot 4300."

I think I was lucky as it's now cloudier in that direction and I was surprised I got anything, as the moon is very bright and almost overhead.

This morning (Dec. 27th @ 0150 UTC), Earth-orbiting satellites recorded a strong M5-class solar flare: image. It came from a developing active region near new sunspot 4323. This region near the sun's eastern limb seems poised for significant sunspot development. If so, the flare could herald more explosions to come. [Space Weather]

Considering only 5% of the universe's matter-energy content is made up of the stars, planets and galaxies we can see whilst 27% is dark matter and 68% is dark energy it strikes me we still have a lot to learn even about the fundamentals of how the cosmos "works"

The Grand Unified Theory of the 4 basic forces has not integrated Quantum Theory with Gravity and to me that would be the next step

Sunspot 4317 was not considered to be a threat for flares - but it erupted anyway. A model from NASA suggests it has an Earth-directed component that will reach our planet on Jan. 1st, potentially sparking the first Arctic auroras of the New Year.
