I personally think Wednesday will see the highest risk of snow for most parts away from Scotland. Tuesday will not quite be cold enough for most, but any showers on Wednesday away from the immediate coast (and there will be showers in the east, north east, north and western peripheries) will be snow for most. Some occasionally heavy localized falls. Thursday has some potential too.

Maybe for inland areas some snow Wednesday morning as the system slips South East?   Looks very marginal, but some pink blobs on UKV, some areas could get lucky with some heavy precipitation.

In this general region, some altitude will definitely be required.

I'm pleased to see this thread. 👍It got me thinking about the UK's "snow paradox". On the one hand it can easily snow even in the south at this time of the year, on the other hand it rarely does even in the middle of winter.

We had some snow cover in November last year, as for this current situation, this is what I think:

Snow for higher parts of Edinburgh tomorrow such as Balerno, Swanston, Fairmilehead and of course The Pentlands. Expecting sleet at best below 150m and rain near the coast

Later in the day as colder air digs in, there is some suggestion that the snow level will fall 🤔

Wednesday may well dawn with snow covered hills and ice...I hope so!

Any snow showers on Wed & Thurs will affect the northern half of Scotland and the eastern side of the Borders, Northumberland and North Yorks

Sadly, the latest Met Office forecast which I have seen is going for just rain here with any snow being confined to the hills, and the maximum temperature is still expected to get up to around 5°C here in Edinburgh even with that which isn't even all that much colder than it is just now.

There is an official Met Office yellow warning in place for for tomorrow, but that is only for ice. That warning is expected to only be in force during tomorrow morning and since you will have to be away from from the immediate coastal areas to even be under that warning area, we are not quite even under it here in NW Edinburgh.

All in all, this is quite a massive downgrade on what's been reported on many sources up until now although given how much more difficult it is to actually get any cold and snowy weather these days under this current era of ongoing climate change, that should come as no surprise.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

This an interesting NOTAM (essentially aviation forecast) for Aberdeen over the next 24 hours (until 6am tomorrow). I suspect the next update may be similar too.

Snowing heavily now in Aviemore and Carrbridge as the cold digs in also the rain has turned to wet snow up at Swanston. Swanston down to 2 C now, I'm down to 3 C......just hope that the precipitation moving south, holds together 🤔

I think the “proper cold” is behind the main band in the showery airmass to the north. Just now it is a cold wintry mix here with snow on elevated areas inland. The aviation forecast has it changing to snow by around 8 or 9 pm here.

Definitely sleet here now 2.5 C. Snow up at Swanston 1.8 C

I'll be interested in seeing if the GFS is right tomorrow - it shows torrential sleet over Maidstone and the Downs, with a noon temperature of just 1C in the county town of Kent, a good 9C or 10C below average! The MetO raw has 4C and rain instead, and both just have rain here.

IF (and it's a huge, massive "if") the GFS is right then I would expect snow reports from higher ground in the south.

I'd love to be back in Birdlip (Cotswolds) tonight - I think they'll do well out of this situation. At 300m asl they should have a good covering by morning.

Sadly there are no webcam in the village.

I'll be very disappointed not see a few flakes here tomorrow morning. Whether it will be enough to settled is a different question.

Kudos to Q for predicting a more widespread event.  The BBC and Met office have been caught out by this
