It's a hard one to call. I think I'll go for a slightly warmer one than average.

If it's still open, I'll go for 11.2. If not, no worries.

Well the predictions are in and unsurprisingly there's no one who's brave enough to call a colder than average month mind you no one has gone for a particularly warm one either. Distinctly average for the 2020s seems to be the order of the day!

It's an overly simple way of looking at it but essentially you have to live 200m up a hill now to get the same climate that you did at sea level when I was a kid.

There's a considerable signal for a negative NAO pattern emerging for approx. the final third of October, which is preceded by the possibility of a cool or even chilly feed from the east developing next week, so I'm not so sure this is going to register as a warm month overall.

In fact I have a growing concern that it might behave like September, with low minimums dragging the CET down considerably.

Much water to pass under the bridge though, so... we'll see!

But then, much can and will change. As you allude to, GFS 0z throws out an FI with 'our' high retrogressing to Greenland and a big Scandy low, ushering in a cold northerly for the last week of the month!

We've all gone lower than the current value, so as the month goes on it will be interesting to see how far down it goes. Each one of us will be willing the average to our guesstimate... And then weep a little as it drops further down!

(Also that weeping might be the only rain we get too!!)

It's a slow and controlled drop off so far.

This month is more notable for being dry than anything else so far, temps have been incredibly boring. I've got courgettes still growing in the garden albeit slowly due to the lack of low minima , despite being in a relatively frost prone spot. I'm finding myself still watering them... but equally there has been nothing especially warm, just near to slightly above average all the time so far. Expect this will get shaken up by the end of the month of course
