Good grief - so there is! I've had a busy day and have just consumed the better part of a bottle of Moldovan wine to celebrate their election result. I'd better not go stumbling about in the garden! Maybe I can see it if I just close my eyes....... 🤣🤣🤣

RUSSELL-McPHERRON EFFECT TRIGGERS SURPRISE AURORAS: Last night, bright auroras appeared when Earth’s magnetic field linked with the sun’s. There was no solar storm. Nevertheless, red pillars spread as far south as Illinois in the USA.

Indeed congratulations both of you.

Since this is space news I was in the right place earlier this morning to watch Starlink pass overhead and vanish to the east.

Amazing sight under brilliant starry clear skies with a shooting star thrown in too and the early transatlantic flights approaching.

Look from SOUTHWEST (240°) to EAST (71°)

"Earth has entered a stream of solar wind blowing faster than 700 km/s (1.6 million mph). This is extending geomagnetic unrest for the third day in a row. NOAA forecasters say G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Oct. 1st with continued auroras at high latitudes."

"Not all the lights in the sky were auroras. Many observers also witnessed STEVE -- a bright mauve ribbon of light caused by hot plasma currents in the upper atmosphere. Daryl Pederson saw STEVE making a majestic 'X' with the Milky Way over Sterling, Alaska:"

"We're about to get our best look yet at an interstellar comet. On Oct. 3rd, 3I/ATLAS will fly by Mars where an international fleet of spacecraft is waiting to observe it. The encounter could produce "the definitive dataset" on this mysterious object, researchers say."

"With so much attention on interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS, it is easy to forget a local comet brightening so rapidly that ordinary sky watchers will soon be able to see it with their own eyes: Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6)."

Went outside for a look about 02.15hrs. The Moon was high in the sky - almost overhead, slightly to the south, visible through light cloud. Certainly very bright, but little detail observable. To really appreciate a "Supermoon" it's best to see it low down against features such as buildings or landscapes. Good though.

3+ CMEs on the way?

"An updated NOAA model shows at least three CMEs heading for Earth. Most of them come from active sunspot 4246, described below. Although the CMEs are individually faint and relatively slow, they could combine to cause a G1 or G2-class geomagnetic storm when they arrive on Oct. 16-17"

Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6)

"On Oct. 21st, Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) will make its closest approach to Earth.

The brightening comet has reached magnitude +4.5, making it an easy target for

off-the-shelf cameras."

Cracking photo:

"Steve Fearn, 52, from Lincolnshire, said it was "quite a buzz, capturing something so unique" as he pictured it over the life-size sculpture of the bomber, titled On Freedom's Wings, which honours RAF crews of World War Two. The image also shows a grey light going across the sky, which he said he believed was fuel from a Space X rocket."

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORMS PREDICTED: Solar activity is suddenly high with multiple X-class and strong M-class solar flares since Monday. At least three CMEs are expected to graze or directly hit Earth this week, potentially sparking strong geomagnetic storms on Nov. 6-7.
