Ready for Sunday morning

Last night was forecast to be quite a warm night, but ended up being much cooler than expected with an overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank of 10.0°C.

However, today has started off on a bright and sunny note which is something which hasn't actually been the case all that often in recent days. Nevertheless, this has been the year in which the Sun just won't stop shining and I believe that the next couple of days will show that up really well.

I have been saying for the last couple of days that the Sun would come through in the end and that we would just end up back to square one as far as this year is concerned with the same old weather as before. That didn't quite happen as expected yesterday, but that hasn't prevented me from sticking with my prediction and I don't believe that it will cloud over today as it did yesterday.

The Met Office have also come into line with that and are predicting a maximum of around 22°C for here today. Even as that happens, I will then be proved right with that prediction after all, and the Met Office have even upgraded tomorrow's forecast by now going for a maximum of around 25°C on that day.

The outcome of this is that in the next couple of days, we will probably get the required amount of sunshine with almost a week to spare for both this month and this summer to go down as being sunnier than average and that is what will ultimately prove that this continues to be the year in which the Sun just won't stop shining despite the last few days being relatively disappointing in that regard.

Currently, it's only around 12°C here in Edinburgh but I am expecting it to warm up quite a bit during the day.

Just after my last post on here, it then clouded here once again from the SW.

In order for us to get the required amount of sunshine over the next couple of days to give us a sunnier than average month and a sunnier than average summer, we need to be averaging just over 7 hours of sunshine per day over those two days which means that we could probably be doing with a decent total for today in order for there to still be a chance of that happening. In order for that to be the case though, we really need this cloud cover to sod off which has just arrived but hopefully, that will happen over the course of today.

The reason why that's important is due to the outlook beyond tomorrow being less settled which means that our chances of getting any decent sunshine totals beyond tomorrow are very much reduced as a result. Even if we don't get those required amounts of sunshine by the end of tomorrow, I still believe that we have enough in the bag to get there in the end, but it's not going to be as easy to get those required totals then.

With that earlier sunshine which we have just had though, the temperature here in Edinburgh is now up to around 17°C.

Here in Edinburgh, the clouds have now broken up with the temperature now up to around 20°C which already means that today is warmer than of late, so it looks as though my prediction about us returning to the same old weather for now as we've been seeing for most of this year is once again back on track to be proven correct once again.

Much warmer today, a 22 C Max already but yet again cloud sits heavily over west & south Edinburgh. To the east there's plenty of blue sky

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 23.4°C, so today was even warmer than it was forecast to be which should come as no surprise given what this year has generally been like and once again, the Met Office have further upgraded tomorrow's forecast by going for a temperature of around 26°C for here.

However, a total of only 2.5 hours of sunshine had been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 6:40pm BST (17:40 UTC) this evening although today's final total will probably be slightly more than that as this evening has been sunnier with only some high cloud around.

Nevertheless, there is now just exactly a week to go until the end of the month and this still leaves us needing at least another 11.8 hours of sunshine in that time in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average with at least another 12.1 hours of sunshine still being needed in that time in order for this summer to go down as being sunnier than average.

Tomorrow was always forecast to be sunnier than today, so there is still an outside chance that those targets could be achieved as early as tomorrow. However, that is now a very tall order as we're now less than a month away from the Autumn Equinox which means that it's now very difficult to actually get 12 or more hours of sunshine in any given day, and that will only get even more difficult over time as the days continue to shorten.

In the meantime, the temperature here in Edinburgh is still around 20°C and once again, I'm starting to swelter a bit in this little flat in which I live.

Yes a lovely warm and autumnal feeling evening here. It was still 20 C at 8pm and despite being eaten alive by wee beastie's I've been working in the garden. There's a smell of woodsmoke in the air and it does feel like the end of Summer

I head to Portugal for 4 weeks on Tuesday so a nice extension of Summer for me before I arrive back to Autumn proper

A rare summer's morn. Deep blue purple skies with quality golden sunshine and a brisk zephyr to boot. Still horrifically warm and humid though, but at least the air is a bit less stagnated than recently. 18.3c.

As at 11:40am BST (10:40 UTC) this morning, a total of 4.2 hours of sunshine had already been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh which means that today is already sunnier than of late. It is in the process of clouding over from the SW but even with that, the forecasts did say that today would be sunnier than of late and regardless of what happens during the rest of the day, that aspect of today's forecast has already been proved to be correct although that additional cloud cover now looks likely to scupper any chances of our targets for both this month and this summer to be sunnier to be sunnier than average, being met as quickly as the end of today as seemed likely at one point.

However, there was quite a big jump in the temperature of 10.3°C in the space of just three hours at Edinburgh Gogarbank this morning and as I write, it's currently around 22°C here in Edinburgh.

EDIT:

Upon further observation, I've just noticed that the skies are clear once again to the south and west behind that narrow band of high cloud, so I would say that even more sunshine looks to be on the cards for this afternoon and evening which means that I still wouldn't yet completely rule out the chances of those targets being met by the end of today for both this month and this summer to go down as being sunnier than average (even if that doesn't actually happen, I don't think that we will be very far off that by the end of today).

Currently 24.4c after a high of 27.3c and sunny all day, lovely bonus day of the weekend.

Flying to Melbourne on Wednesday and after a few days of chilly weather, next week looks like being mostly up around 17-20c so not bad for the 1st week of spring.

The temperature at Edinburgh Airport reached 26°C today but those temperatures are only ever recorded to the nearest 1°C and with a greater degree of accuracy, the maximum temperature there might have been shown as being not actually quite as high as 26°C.

The maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 25.6°C which does round to 26°C if you report that to the nearest 1°C but since that isn't how those temperatures are recorded, that doesn't really count in that regard.

As for the other main Edinburgh stations, today's maximum temperature was 25.35°C at the botanic gardens and 24.8°C at Swanston.

However, today's highest temperature in Edinburgh was 26°C to the nearest 1°C so on that basis, today's official Met Office forecasts were exactly spot on in that regard.

In addition to that, a total of 9.2 hours of sunshine was recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 6:40pm BST (18:40 UTC) this evening.

This leaves us now needing a total of just at least another 2.2 hours of sunshine in the 6 days which are left of this month in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average with just at least another 2.5 hours of sunshine needing to be recorded in that time in order for this summer to go down as being sunnier than average.

Those targets can't quite be achieved tonight but my prediction about us not being all that far away from that happening has been shown to be correct. With 6 days left of this month, that should be achieved quite comfortably and even though the outlook is now less settled than of late, there is still a very good chance that those targets will be met as early as tomorrow.

As I write, it's still a very warm 23°C and although it might feel nice for some people, that is not the case for me. As I've mentioned a number of times on here recently, I struggle badly when it comes to hot weather and just now, I'm absolutely sweltering in this little flat where I live. Because of that, I'm now looking forward to some cooler weather to bring a bit of relief from that (that couldn't come quickly enough now as far as I'm concerned), preferably with some much needed rainfall for the gardens (hopefully, we will at least get a little bit of that during the night from the trailing weather front which is expected to come in during the night, that is associated with ex-Hurricane Erin.

As I write, it's 11pm and yet the temperature here in Edinburgh is still at around 20°C which is ridiculously warm for so late at night in this part of the world (that is more like what I would expect to see in somewhere like Central London, and not here in Edinburgh), even at this time of the year.

As a result, I am absolutely roasting in this little flat in which I live.

Will we see one in September?
