28.2C at Porthmadog so far. Also around 27C on the coast at Chivenor and Bude - notably hot for West Country coastal locations. I'm heading down to Devon tonight but the warmth will have gone by the time I get there and tomorrow looks a bit meh.

Those stats are incorrect. 

8 days in July 2013 saw temperatures exceed 30C and seven of them were consecutive. There were also a number of other days that came very close to 30C in that July.

The hottest day of that year was in August though. 

It's 30c days up to July 13th only. 

He posted another table of total 30c days and 2013 had 11.

Ah okay that makes more sense  🙂

On that the top four years with most 30c days are-

1995 - 34

2018 - 28

1976 - 24

2006 - 21

So we have a long way to go yet for this year to become a Classic. 

The maximum recorded at Aboyne yesterday was an impressive 30.8C which is the third highest on record after 31.3 and 31.8C in July 2022.

What was much more unusual was that the temperature fell quickly in the evening down to a minimum of 5.6C early this morning, giving a daily range of 25.2C. This range won't be reflected in the official statistics as the maximum is credited to 12th July but the minimum is credited to 13th.

Big temperature ranges are often from a cold start to a warm afternoon, so this is slightly different.

Only 28.5c the high so far.  Very touch and go if we make 30c now

An impressive heat wave for Scotland. Is that three consecutive 30°C days for them? If so that is pretty exceptional.

Meanwhile here it's slightly cooler today with a bit more cloud around. The high looks to be 27.8°C on my PWS.

There's a much better chance of another 30 tomorrow, this time in my part of the world. The MetO text forecast for the SE says, for tomorrow:

"Variable cloud with bright spells and isolated showers, perhaps turning thundery in the afternoon. Feeling very warm or hot in the sunshine. Cooler, fresher conditions developing overnight. Maximum temperature 29 °C."

...and the automated keeps switching between 28 and 29. Gusty SW'lies are ideal for high temperatures here due to the Foehn effect, and I would suspect if anywhere does it, Brogdale will. We won't know for a few more days though!

Yesterday there was a theoretical 17hr 54min of sun possible in Kirkwall. On the summer solstice there is a possible 18hr 30min, and. 18hr 56min. In London there's only a theoretical max of about 16hr 38min at midsummer.

Has anywhere ever recorded 17 or 18 hours of sunshine in a day? Unbroken sun must be pretty rare in those northern latitudes in midsummer.

Re tomorrow's max, the models seem to have the far east of E Anglia as the hottest, and there aren't many stations there. Tibenham maybe.

I'm actually doubting the 1995 number here it seems to high, does anyone have any other data?

No heatwave here in Edinburgh though.

We did get to 26.0°C and 25.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank on Friday and Saturday respectively but today's maximum at that same station looks like reaching only around 23°C thanks to some cloud cover at times and a breeze from off the North Sea.

Nevertheless, today's temperatures for here are still a bit higher than what was forecast by the Met Office. The Sun is shining just now and if it continues to stay out, a very late jump in the temperature to take us to the threshold of an official heatwave here in Edinburgh still can't be completely ruled out.

I looked back at the Footpath Society magazine that a friend and I used to produce, each issue having a local walk around our village near Maidstone. As I drew the walk maps, the annotations were often weather-related. 1995 doesn't feature as being exceptional but 1989 had an August walk entitled 'Baked Fields and Pastures Brown', and it states that London had had less than 9" (say 225mm) of rain Jan-Jul that year. 

I remember the walk as I had checked it over the previous month and the fields were looking drier and browner than they are at the moment - but we still have have half of July to go.

yes, I dont remember that many very hot days. Must be a mistake.  But It was a great summer, especially August and ended with a spectacular thundery spell. 

It happens more often than you think.

For example Porthmadog was warmest in UK twice in May, Trawsgoed or Gogerddan near Aberystwyth can feature in hot easterly flows in Summer, St Athan and Cardiff also grab it on occasion.

It's annoying these stats are not more accessible.
