I was surprised to see Charlwood as the official hottest place yesterday. I'm not far from there and when I took the dog out at 7am there was already a lot of cloud building here. Lines of AcCas type stuff coming in from the south east as well as a more threatening heavy grey mass slightly to the west (friends in Effingham reported a rain shower in the morning). Spent the morning doing some gardening for the increasingly dependant in-laws and even on the normally sunny West Sussex coast there was quite a lot of cloud building. Had a few spots of rain on the windscreen on the M23 on the way home and a couple of light showers of big heavy rain drops (if that makes sense) during the afternoon at home.

Whilst it was certainly a very warm, humid day it never felt like a 33c day to me. There must have been a sufficiently long clear slot whilst I was elsewhere for the temperature to shoot up. It certainly would have been really hot if the cloud had kept away as per earlier forecasts

I note from Trevor Harley's excellent site that there have only been 22 years since 1875 when 30c has not been exceeded.

Summer will be spray.
