I'm not sure that's accurate - Trevor Harley who is usually pretty good on stats (if not spelling!) says this for 2000:
Brief hot spell midmonth (17-19th): 32C in Leeds on the 18th; 32.8C at Colthishall (Norfolk) on the 19th was the hottest day of the year.
