That beats the old record of 27.8°C which goes all the way back to 1982 and the actual new record itself will probably be slightly higher than that as that new record will now be set by the official figure for today's maximum temperature at that same station when that is officially confirmed by the 18z raw SYNOP/BUFR data.

Incidentally where do you look for the 10 minute readings?

PS Jersey hit 31.6C today - not the UK but often used to appear in the daily lists back in the day. Pretty toasty for an island.

Does anyone know what the June Welsh record is? I'm guessing at low 30s which we must have approached either yesterday or today.

Currently living at roughly 65m asl North of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Formerly of, Birdlip, highest village in the Cotswolds and snow heaven in winter; Hawkinge in Kent - roof of the South downs and Isles of Scilly, paradise in the UK.

33.7C on 18 June 2000, which is higher than I would have expected. (I don't remember 2000 being a great summer either!)

I'm not sure that's accurate - Trevor Harley who is usually pretty good on stats (if not spelling!) says this for 2000:

Brief hot spell midmonth (17-19th): 32C in Leeds on the 18th; 32.8C at Colthishall (Norfolk) on the 19th was the hottest day of the year.

I get those 10 minute readings from the raw BUFR data (the raw SYNOP data is only half hourly data as far as I know) and I then use a python script which I have written to then decode all of that data into a format in which I can then use to report that wherever I wish to do so such as on this forum. As for the raw BUFR data itself, I get that from ogimet.com and my script is set up to download that data from the right places according to the time frames for which I am downloading that.

Incidentally, that figure of 28.4°C is only today's provisional maximum temperature as confirmed by the 18z raw BUFR/SYNOP data (technically, it is actually the 12 hourly maximum temperature for the period from 06z to 18z so for that reason, I have setup my script to download the minimum and maximum temperatures from the 09z and 21z raw BUFR data only as that is what represents the best fit according to the official Met Office observation day). As I write, the temperature even as late as 7pm BST (18:00 BST) was still at around 28°C here in Edinburgh and had even gone back up a bit over the last wee while. This means that there is still an outside chance that the temperature might not have peaked yet for today despite the very late time of the day. Because of that, there is still an outside chance that today's actual maximum temperature could end up being even higher than that value of 28.4°C. For that, we will now need to wait for the 21z raw BUFR/SYNOP data which will then give us the 12 hour maximum temperature for the period from 09:00 UTC to 21:00 UTC.

That will then be more likely to be our actual maximum temperature although even with that, this can only continue to remain provisional until 09:00 UTC (10am BST) tomorrow morning when the current observation day officially ends.

Interesting that Gatwick airport less than 1 mile from Charlwood didn't record higher than 30C on the hourly METARs.

32.2C here at 14.45 before high cloud rolled in. I would wait till temps from Norfolk and Suffolk come in before writing off 33C today. Southend near me also recorded 32C.

My station (Davis VP2 with daytime fan - whirring away) reached 32.4 earlier this afternoon, so very similar to you. It was a relatively dry heat out there too, the Downs a dozen miles to the south presumably added a bit of a mini foehn effect as per usual.

I was surprised to see Charlwood as the official hottest place yesterday. I'm not far from there and when I took the dog out at 7am there was already a lot of cloud building here. Lines of AcCas type stuff coming in from the south east as well as a more threatening heavy grey mass slightly to the west (friends in Effingham reported a rain shower in the morning). Spent the morning doing some gardening for the increasingly dependant in-laws and even on the normally sunny West Sussex coast there was quite a lot of cloud building. Had a few spots of rain on the windscreen on the M23 on the way home and a couple of light showers of big heavy rain drops (if that makes sense) during the afternoon at home.

Whilst it was certainly a very warm, humid day it never felt like a 33c day to me. There must have been a sufficiently long clear slot whilst I was elsewhere for the temperature to shoot up. It certainly would have been really hot if the cloud had kept away as per earlier forecasts
