If it's clear, look north. It's faint but Aurora is there. Will post a pic later.

That's a bit "Mr Grumpy" for you, Beast! I thought you'd be salivating about the celebrity participants. 🤣🤣🤣

Some faint pillars, pleasing none the less. That's three times in the last year that I have had the pleasure of seeing Aurora in the UK.

It's worth revisiting the SpaceWeather website for an update: Photos of the storm are still arriving - see the Gallery link....

Interesting  there is no footage of them blasting off and also landing. All we see is them dancing around for a few minutes in orbit like a bunch of drunk tarts

Yesterday the Moon eclipsed the sun. No one on Earth saw it. The "lunar transit" was only visible from space.

THE LARGEST SUNSPOT OF 2025: A huge sunspot is turning toward Earth, posing a threat for strong geoeffective solar flares. Amateur astronomers monitoring the active region have found an unusual ring of "Ellerman Bombs" exploding around the sunspot's planet-sized cores. Full story @

SpaceWeather - could become interesting! I hope so.

"You've heard of the 11-year sunspot cycle. But what about the Centennial Gleissberg Cycle? The Gleissberg Cycle is a slower 100-year modulation of sunspots. New research just published in the journal Space Weather suggests that the Gleissberg Cycle is waking up again, which could make solar cycles for the next 50 years increasingly intense."

I find this research VERY intriguing! I hope WW spots it!

"Solar eclipses aren't just for homo sapiens. Researchers have long known that birds, insects, and many other mammals pay attention when the Moon slides in front of the sun. Now we can add trees to the list."

Partial eclipse on Oct. 25, 2022:  Electrical signals inside spruce trees began to pulse in unison, with older trees seeming to anticipate the eclipse before it happened.

I hope WW spots this SpaceWeather piece:

"After weeks of calm, solar activity is suddenly high again. Since yesterday, the sun has produced two X-class solar flares and multiple strong M-flares. So far, Earth has been on the outer edge of the strike zone, but this could change in the days ahead as the exploding sunspot turns to face our planet."

I noted a peak in geomagnetic activity last night on Aurorawatch UK. See:

https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/

.Now I read: "STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A co-rotating interaction region (CIR) hit Earth today, sparking a strong geomagnetic storm. At the apex of the event, bright auroras appeared over Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. It's not over! Storming is expected to continue for the rest of the day. Full story @ Spaceweather.com.

So have a look: there is a splendid photo from Ely, Minnesota.

Ely is home to the International Wolf Center, which I went to in 1999 with my mum and dad - my first proper trip to the USA. It's a wonderful facility, with a giant "log cabin" appearance, and the sort of thing the wolf centre I go to aspired to. A fun thing happened on the way to it, though; while driving along highway 169 (their equivalent of a B-road, i.e. wide and massive compared to ours) we saw a sign for mini golf a mile down the road.

Amongst the endless woods there was a single house, with a big driveway. The guy had laid out a crazy golf course, a proper one, in his garden, and we had a go for a couple of bucks each (with free Coke and bug spray provided). While we were playing, the guy said "what brings you to Minnesota?", so we explained about the wolf centre - and enthused about how lovely the trees and lakes were. He took them all for granted, and found it hard to believe foreigners like us found the scenery so beautiful!

Minnesotan cars have "Land of 10000 Lakes" on their number plates, and it's for good reason.

Right folks - lets see who can spot an aurora this weekend. Clear skies!

"A CME is heading straight for Earth--see below. A NASA model predicts it will strike Earth during the early hours of June 1st. The impact could spark strong (G3-class) geomagnetic storms with auroras at mid-latitudes."

Clear skies are only part of the issue. Waiting for it to get dark enough at this time of the year is another.
