it's currently 5.1c in the garden, finally getting some intermittent readings. Still pretty calm too and has been a bit misty this afternoon.

A very unusual situation in the back garden - the lawn is covered with puddles, and I've never seen so much standing water. There has been 17mm of rain from this system, but even so it usually drains faster than this, especially as it'd been dry for a couple of days.

I can only think that the soil just below the surface is frozen, preventing the water from draining! That's a new one on me, but given the sudden warm-up this morning it makes sense, I think.

EDIT: And having been out, poking with a cut-off cane, it seems there is indeed a frozen layer, or something, about 1 to 1.5cm down. Go through that and the water slowly drains away!

High of 2.8c today, and with a min of 0.7c. Real limbo territory. RH slightly below 90% though so hopefully that'll help dry up the roads and footpaths after last night's drizzle storm.

And I've learnt something too - I hadn't twigged, until this morning, that frozen ground would stop water getting through, but of course it would block it.

No chance of any such problems tonight, mind you... it's now 12.3, dew 11.7, with gusty winds - back to autumn for another 15 hours or so.

This has to be very unusual - we're now up to a 25C difference across the UK! Loch Glascarnoch is in its own little ice-age....

(I guess we saw greater when the -27.2 records were set, and any time -20s have appeared, but even so - it's been a while)

Still raining here in NW Edinburgh without even the slightest hint of any wintriness, and the temperatures are also refusing to drop remaining stuck at around 2°C here in Edinburgh so unless it unexpectedly clears away during the night, it looks as though our run of air frosts in this year is about to end.😡
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Blowing a hoolie outside - gusts into the high 40s / low 50s, meaning this time the honours go to the Met Office model - that's 3-3 to each of the GFS/Met Office forecasts for the windy periods so far this autumn/winter. There's the de rigueur warm sector drizzle too, though that should die off in advance of the front.

It's still exceptionally mild, for now, at 12.2C, dew 10.1. Last night's low was 11.2 (8C above average), and yesterday's high was 12.4 (a more modest 4C or so above average).

After yesterday's mild blip of 13C it's back to a fresh 4C and damp after heavy bursts of overnight rain.

Windy from the WNW which takes even more off the edge off too.

Not sure I entirely trust the rain gauge on my WS but over 40mm of rain from this LP now, the bulk of which fell yesterday with 3mm so far today. I did have a little look at surrounding stations yesterday and they ranged from around 5mm more than me to 5-10mm less.

Temps remain at a very mild 9.6c with a gusty wind - so far this mild interlude has lifted the average from very cold to normal although would expect that to be reversed over the next few days.

Edit - quite a fun little change in temps just happened, now down to 4.6c in a matter of minutes.

The mild air never reached here but slow thaw and max 2.2C at 3am.

Dropping again now with more typical wintry showers off north sea.

Very little thaw at higher levels looks like about a foot up there.

It's actually the mildest it has been here since Saturday at 1.1c now, but that is as the precipitation has stopped.

Dew point is slowly falling.

Slow thaw going on, our road has been ploughed now.

13-18cm cover.

That boring near constant in-your-face southerly gale has just finally eased off along with some brightening up, temps now creeping down to 8.8 C after a peak of 11.8 C at 6 am.  At least rainfall amounts has been scant so far today with 0.4 mm, I've picked up 20.8 mm yesterday.

There was a dramatic drop in temperature from 10.5c at 7.15am to 2c at 9.15am. At one point, it was dropping 7.5c / hour.

Now sleet and snow mix, impressive 48 hours with a weather roller coaster.
